That's all from this contest where South Africa take the lead in the ODI series. This is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my co-commentator Sourabh Agrawal. We will see you soon!
Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain) : This has been an excellent overall performance from the boys tonight. The wicket was slow and Keshav showed his class. Not a bad toss to lose at all. Would not have taken it any other way. The teammates also made me look nice with the reviews. For us, it was about staying proactive and quickly changing plans if the bowlers are travelling around the park. I wanted to stay at the crease for a long time and that was the conversation with young Matthew Breetzke also. The goal was to reach somewhere around 300. The stats reveal a story at this venue. Anywhere above 240 has been a successful score for most teams while going about their business batting first.
Mitchell Marsh (Australia captain) : Yeah, Maharaj is an outstanding bowler. We saw more spin than what we had expected. I do not think it was a lack of confidence, we have played a whole lot of spin in recent times and today was simply an occasion of one bowler outdoing our entire bowling unit. Will get the changes done to our playing combination depending on how the conditions are in the next venue.
Keshav Maharaj has been awarded as the Player of the Match for his 5/33, here are his words:
Vey much so (feels surreal). Made my debut in 2016 in Australia, wonderful to get by first 5-er. Just tried to utilize the conditions, the wicket was a little sticky with the new ball, tried to utilize that and got the rewards. The boys spoke about it coming off a similar wicket in the T20s that there was a bit of spin as the game went on but I think my life was made easier when Prenalen got the first wicket, he bowled exceptionally well on debut. I just tried to use the angles, utilize the conditions and fortunately got the rewards. We've always been slow starters in series so it is good to put the front foot forward, was a well-rounded performance with a good batting display on a tough wicket and then we were clinical with the ball.
Time for the post-match presentations..
9:22 PM Local Time, 4:52 PM IST: South Africa (296 for 8) defeat Australia (198 all out) by 98 runs
Australia have lose their last 4 ODIs in a row against South Africa. Who would have thought this would happen? When Marsh and Head were going great guns at 50 for no loss after 5 overs, it looked as if they would cruise to victory. South Africa leaked runs at the start of the chase. Fortune favoured the Aussie openers at that time with their offensive approach to this chase. 21 runs came in the 5th over.
That forced Bavuma to bring spin as early as in the 6th over of the innings. It was the debutant Subrayen, who broke the 60 run opening stand in the first ball of the 8th over. The introduction of Keshav Maharaj in the 9th over saw him dismiss Labuschagne in his very first delivery of the match. The left arm spinner knocked over Cam Green in the first ball of his 2nd over and then did the same to Josh Inglis in his next over.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as Maharaj enjoyed one of his most distinguished nights of his international career after the umpire raised the finger to signal Carey's golden duck. The Aussie batters had no answers to the spin wizardry of Maharaj as he registered his maiden 5 wicket haul in ODIs - in only his 5th over, with Aaron Hardie playing inside the line to see his woodwork disturbed behind him.
Maharaj chose destruction for his opposition. In a mixture of bowled and LBWs, he unleashed a web of mesmerising balls which pushed back Australia significantly to what almost looked like a point of no return. Keshav Maharaj concluded his day at work in the 27th over of the chase with figures that made for impressive reading - 5 for 33 - at one point he was at 5 for 9 runs as he firmly put his side in the driving seat. His only blemish was a dropped catch.
At 89 for 6, Dwarshuis joined Marsh to put up a half century stand. Once Maharaj got done with his quota, there were no demons in the Protea bowling attack for the Aussies to tackle. The 71 run 7th wicket stand was broken by Burger in his 2nd over of his 2nd spell in the 33rd over. Marsh, after a heroic 88 runs effort, eventually became Burger's 2nd victim and the 8th Aussie wicket to fall in the 37th over.
Nandre Burger's first 4 overs went for 46 runs, without any wickets. His next 4 overs when he returned for his 2nd spell only went for 8 runs, picking up a couple of scalps which also included a wicket maiden. In the end, it was all a bit too much for the home side who succumb to a comprehensive defeat.
Adam Zampa has been dismissed for 11 runs off 18 balls
40.5 Lungisani Ngidi to Adam Zampa, RATTLES THE STUMPS AND SOUTH AFRICA WIN THE SERIES OPENER. That is a comprehensive victory for the visitors, they get the better of the home side by 98 runs and in the end it turns out to be one-sided affair at Cairns. Coming to the delivery, it was the off-cutter again, full around the off stump. Zampa wanted to give it a big smack but was done by the lack of pace and the ball took a thin inside-edge before cannoning into the stumps. Ngidi celebrates with a big jump, handshakes all around as South Africa go 1-0 up in the 3-match series.
40.4 Lungisani Ngidi to Adam Zampa, full at off, Zampa defends off the frontfoot
40.3 Lungisani Ngidi to Josh Hazlewood, THE DIPPING YORKER, almost has Hazlewood first ball. Takes all the pace off it and it dies on Hazlewood, the number 11 does well to jam his bat down and squeeze that out on the leg side
Josh Hazlewood batting at 11th position
Nathan Ellis has been dismissed for 14 runs off 20 balls
40.2 Lungisani Ngidi to Nathan Ellis, RAPPED ON THE PADS AND GIVEN, that looked to be sliding down the leg side but unfortunately for Ellis they do not have any reviews remaining. Slower ball from Ngidi, short of a length and it does not get up, Ellis did not pick it and got hit on the pads but that looked to be going down with the angle and the revolutions. Not that it would matter at this stage, though.
40.1 Lungisani Ngidi to Adam Zampa, short of a length at the off stump, Zampa stands tall and punches it to cover. Stubbs having a hard time in the field, fumbles and concedes a single
40 overs are done. The target is more than 100 runs away. But Ellis is having some fun out there. Maybe he is auditioning for a higher batting berth for future. Those are some crisp shots with proper technique.

39.6 Prenelan Subrayen to Nathan Ellis, SIX. Ellis shows his partner how it is done. Chips down and gets to the pitch of it, hits it sweetly back down the ground and it carries all the way. Was a lovely hit.
39.5 Prenelan Subrayen to Adam Zampa, flatter at the stumps, knocked down to long-on
39.4 Prenelan Subrayen to Adam Zampa, Zampa gives the charge this time and just about gets enough on it to clear mid-off, gets two in return
39.3 Prenelan Subrayen to Nathan Ellis, a little shimmy down to get to it on the full, patted to deep cover
