So, that is it from myself, Karthik Raj and my co-commentator, Pradeep as we wrap up the coverage of this fixture. Do stay tuned to Sportskeeda to follow a lot cricketing action on Thursday!
Harmanpreet Kaur [Indian Captain]: "It is a great feeling that we played today. Credit to the bowlers and also the way Deepti (Deepti Sharma) batted, it was a crucial knock. I thought we gave away 20-25 runs extra considering the way we started. However, it was a good wicket to bat on we knew that if the batters settle in, we can chase easily. Fielding is something we are really working on. Today, we missed some chances but hopefully, we improve in the next game. Jemimah's (Jemimah Rodrigues) calmness was fantastic and she was superb in rotating the strike."
Nat Sciver-Brunt [England captain]: "That was massive, Sophia and Alice were brilliant. Ultimately we didn't have a lot of runs on the board with those wickets we lost in heap. We knew we were running quite a lot with boundaries dried up. The way that we stayed in the game for as long as we did, with the wickets we took and kept the pressure on. That partnership of Deepti and Jemi did a lot of damage for us. It's all about being disciplined and helps you being in the game. That wasn't much of an appeal, thought it was going down."
Deepti Sharma is the Player of the Match! Here's what she has to say: "I was waiting for this opportunity, me and Rodrigues discussed in the middle, wanted to take it deep and take the singles, and doubles and it worked out for us. I back myself to play the sweep, on these track it helped me. I played in the practice that shot a lot, I saw from Pant and I loved it. We played a lot of series in England, we're used to this condition here. "
Charlie Dean 10-0-52-2 | Sophie Ecclestone 10-1-34-1
A fine chase from India as they seal a four-wicket victory at Southampton to take a 1-0 lead in this ODI series. The game did get closer than India would have liked but Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur batted sensibly to see the team over the line.
Chasing 259 for victory, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal started off superbly with the English pacers erring majorly with their line. Smriti Mandhana, in particular, was brutal with the pull shot as she batted with a strike-rate of over 100 until Lauren Bell had her nick off to Amy Jones in the 8th over.
The scoring rate dipped after that as Pratika and Harleen Deol tried to rebuild with Nat Sciver-Brunt bowling the duo of Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone in tandem. Against the run of play, Pratika was bowled by Ecclestone in the 19th over. A few overs later, Harleen also paid a huge price for being casual with her running as he was run-out at the bowler's end.
This saw the reliable pairing of Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues get together as India needed to start fresh once again. The Indian captain, Harmanpreet struggled to get going though as the English spinners started to increase the asking rate with tight overs. Eventually, England took a superb review as Charlie Dean trapped Harmanpreet in front. This is when the Indian team management sprung a surprise by promoting Deepti Sharma to No.6. The move worked perfectly though as both Jemimah and Deepti began scoring runs at a superb rate.
They managed to put together a 90-run stand which had India in the driver's seat before Jemimah Rodrigues was caught behind after trying to play a scoop shot off Lauren Filer in the 42nd over. Charlie Dean put further pressure on the visitors by having Richa Ghosh stumped to make the chase slightly interesting. Yet, Deepti continued to bat as usual to get to her fifty while she received superb support from Amanjot Kaur. In the end, Amanjot struck consecutive boundaries off Kate Cross to finish the game with 10 balls to spare.
48.2 Kate Cross to Amanjot Kaur, FOUR! THAT'S IT! India win and take 1-0 lead in this three-match ODI series! India romped home with a commanding chase, outclassing England with precision. Back of a length outside the off-stump, width on offer and Kaur latched on to it, reaches and cuts it hard through backward point, races away to the ropes.
48.1 Kate Cross to Amanjot Kaur, FOUR! SHOT! Length delivery on off-stump, Kaur effortlessly flicked it over mid-wicket, goes couple of bounces into the ropes. SCORES ARE LEVEL!
Four singles off the over. India now need 5 off 12 balls.
