Comments from the skippers

Virat Kohli : It was quite surprising, because it went down to the wire. A bit of pressure can confuse you, it was a good performance by Kings XI in the end. We had a chat, it (AB batting at no, 6) was a message about the left-hand, right-hand combination. Sometimes these decisions you take, don't come off. But I think 170 was a decent score. That's the idea, get your eye in and start hitting. But we were not able to put them under pressure. We take a lot of pride as a bowling side, but tonight was one of those nights, as it didn't come off. A few positives from the game. There was no conversation between Yuzi (Chahal) and me to be honest. Things became interesting to be honest. They kind of let us come back in the game, because I think it should have ended by the 18th over.

KL Rahul: I don't even have words. We knew that we had to scrap and get over the line once and that would give us the confidence. We're a far better side than bottom of the table. Towards the end it got too close for comfort but happy that we made it. It's very natural to feel disappointed and frustrated and it's not just me, as a group we've been frustrated. Our skills were very good, probably didn't capitalise in the big moments starting with the first game at Delhi. It's part of the IPL, it's part of cricket. There are ups and downs and this has been the kind of rollercoaster that's been crazy but on a positive note we needed this win. At the moment, my first time as captain, you kind of don't reflect on your own performance. As a leader you need to think of everybody and how to manage the 15 or the 25 balanced and hungry to do well. That's been the challenge so personal performances haven't been on my mind so much. Chris has nott been feeling well but he's always been hungry. Anyone who saw him, he was training hard like he's probably never done. It was a tough call to make not to play someone like that. I won't take credit but it's important to keep the lion hungry sometimes. Wherever he bats, he's still the same player and it worked today. Hopefully he can carry on.
After all the drama in that final over, Pooran finished it off with such confidence. KXIP have done the double over RCB this season even though these are their only two wins so far. The openers, Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul kicked off the chase in magnificent fashion with a 78-run partnership before Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed the former off the last ball of the eighth over. This wicket saw the introduction of Chris Gayle for the first time this season but he didn't start well and was on 4 runs off 12 balls at one point. With the asking rate rising, it was KL Rahul's two sixes off Mohammad Siraj in the 12th over that cooled down things for KXIP.

In the very next over, Gayle also opened his arms and struck two sixes off Washington Sundar's over to put KXIP in the driver's seat. Even though Chris Morris and Navdeep Saini bowled two tight overs immediately, Gayle and Rahul relieved the pressure once again with 20 runs off Siraj's over. Gayle then made the equation even more simpler with two sixes off Sundar in the 17th over before KXIP almost pulled out a loss from the jaws of a victory. Even though Chris Morris and Isuru Udana bowled superbly, KXIP only required two off the final over. Kohli threw the ball to Yuzvendra Chahal and the leg-spinner showed admirable courage by flightling the ball and bowling it wide to Gayle. Even though Gayle got off strike on the third delivery, Rahul's decision to take a quick single off the penultimate ball saw Gayle run-out to make things really interestingy. However, Pooran held his nerve and smashed the full toss over the straight boundary for KXIP's second win of the tournament.

The RCB seamers expect Mohammad Siraj did bowl well but people will certainly question Kohli as to whether it was the decision to not bowl Chahal until the final over. Even then, the leg-spinner wasn't bowled out. These tactics could have been the difference in the end as RCB could have made a fist of this defense
19.6 Yuzvendra Chahal to Nicholas Pooran, SIX! POORAN FINISHES IT IN STYLE! WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT ANYWAY? Another delivery that is given plenty of air on a full length on middle stump. Pooran comes down the track and gets it on the full. He gets it off the toe end of the bat and the ball just about clears Morris at long on! KXIP, breathe a sigh of relief, just about now!
19.5 Yuzvendra Chahal to KL Rahul, OUT! DRAMA AT SHARJAH! Length delivery on off stump and Rahul waits on the back foot before thumping it straight to extra cover. Rahul then sets off for the single and Gayle is caught miles short at the striker's end. The new batsman will be on strike now!
19.4 Yuzvendra Chahal to KL Rahul, OH! JUST SHORT! ANOTHER DOT! SURELY NOT! Length delivery that is given a bit of air outside off. Rahul goes back and cuts it straight to point
19.3 Yuzvendra Chahal to Chris Gayle, flighted on a full length way outside off stump. Gayle stretches out and swats it over mid wicket for just another single
19.2 Yuzvendra Chahal to Chris Gayle, loopy delivery on a length outside off stump. Gayle thinks that it would go beyond the tramlines but the ball spins back in
19.1 Yuzvendra Chahal to Chris Gayle, length delivery on middle and leg stump that turns into the batsman. Gayle goes onto the back foot and picks out mid wicket
So, this game will go to the last over with KXIP needing two runs to win. Udana bowled some nice yorkers in that over.
Over: 19 | Summary: 0 1w 1 1lb 0 1 1 Bowler: Isuru Udana Score: 170/1
18.6 Isuru Udana to Chris Gayle, knee height full toss on leg stump and Gayle has just eased that one towards deep mid wicket for a single! Would you believe it! He could have hit that one to Abu Dhabi!
18.5 Isuru Udana to KL Rahul, another yorker on off stump. Rahul backs away just a shade and flays it away towards deep point for another run. Over to Gayle now!
18.4 Isuru Udana to KL Rahul, yorker just outside off stump. Rahul sits deep in his crease and looks to carve it past extra cover. However, he can't pick the gap
18.3 Isuru Udana to Chris Gayle, full delivery at the pads and Gayle can't get any wood on his attempted flick shot. The ball deflects off the boot for a leg bye
18.2 Isuru Udana to KL Rahul, right in the slot on off stump and Rahul looks to finish things off in style. But, he shanks his lofted shot towards long on for just a single
18.2 Isuru Udana to KL Rahul, slower delivery that is way outside off stump and is fortunate, that it does not land on the adjacent strip. Called a wide, unsurprisingly!
18.1 Isuru Udana to KL Rahul, full delivery slanted across the batsman well outside off stump. Rahul tries to dig that one out into the off side but only strikes the ground
Just four runs off that Morris over as he a very economical day in the office. Still KXIP only need seven runs to win off the last two overs.
