Dagestan has produced some of the most dominant UFC fighters in recent times. The region, which is part of Russia's North Caucasian Federal District, is home to some of the most fierce MMA competitors today.

UFC fighters take great pride in representing the nation. However, rising flyweight contender Muhammad Mokaev would prefer to represent Dagestan rather than Russia.

Mokaev fled to the United Kingdom when he was 12 years old, following the tragic death of his mother, since his father had political difficulties with the country. Following his arrival in Liverpool, he and his father were housed in a refugee camp and given just $5 per day to survive.

Muhammad Mokaev tweeted his fighter introduction name card from UFC 286 with the caption:

"I don’t like this! Please just keep Dagestan for me for my next walk out!"

The tweet surprised many fight fans, who asked Muhammad Mokaev to provide some context. Former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen joined the chorus and wrote:

"Explain. I mean, I am aware of your position, but I still think you should explain it. A lot of people would find it compelling."

Mokaev elaborated on the reasons why he doesn't want to represent Russia. The Dagestani echoed the sentiments of others who claim that the Russian government has long suppressed the building of new mosques. Some in authority claim that migrant laborers are taking refuge in mosques:

"I have read a lot of comments how Russians against Muslims who wants to building mosque in Moscow! That was enough for me. I can say the country where I live now have never openly gave been against mosques."
