Former ONE women’s atomweight MMA world champion Angela Lee advocated for people to open up about mental health issues.

Inside the Circle, Lee is one of the most accomplished female fighters in ONE Championship history. Yet, nobody realized the struggles she was facing outside of the Circle regarding her mental health, which she’s opened up about over the past year.

In September 2023, Stamp Fairtex was scheduled to fight Ham Seo Hee for the interim ONE women’s atomweight MMA world championship. Before the main event fight, Lee announced she was officially vacating her world title and retiring, leading to Stamp becoming the undisputed queen.

Since then, Lee has continued her quest to educate people about the importance of mental health. During a recent appearance on the Keep it Aloha Podcast, ‘Unstoppable’ shared the following wisdom from her experiences:

“I think once we realize that, ‘Hey it's not so scary to talk about this,’ then we can connect that much further and see that struggles and adversity and overcoming it. It really unites us all, and to show that it's okay to go through these things, it doesn't make you any less of a person.”

Is Christian Lee following in Angela Lee’s footsteps by retiring from MMA?

Angela Lee has dealt with mental health struggles for several years. In late December 2022, Lee hit an all-time low after finding out her eighteen-year-old younger sister, Victoria Lee, who was an MMA prodigy, had tragically passed away.

Lee decided to endure an extended layoff before ultimately retiring. Meanwhile, two-division ONE MMA world champion Christian Lee, the brother of Angela, also took time off to recover from the loss of his younger sister.

After careful consideration, Christian Lee has announced he will return to action in 2024. It’s unclear who and when he will fight, but there are plenty of options for the two-division world champion.
