In a piece of shocking news on the first day of the new year, UFC lightweight contender Damir Ismagulov announced his retirement from combat sports.

The 31-year-old fighter was last seen in action against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland back in December 2022. During his eight years in the sport, Damir Ismagulov achieved remarkable results, defeating opponents such as Rafael Alves, Thiago Moises, and Guram Kutateladze, to name a few.

Through an Instagram post, the former M-1 Global lightweight champion revealed being forced to end his career due to health problems. The 31-year-old wrote:

"Unfortunately, due to circumstances and health problems, I am forced to end my sports career. Thanks to all those who were with me regardless of the outcome in the battles, who were sincerely sick and worried. It was an interesting journey, a moment to remember. Gave everyone a hug."

Damir Ismagulov's retirement came shortly after his first-ever loss in the UFC. The fighter suffered a unanimous decision loss against Arman Tsarukyan at UFC Vegas 66, thus ending his staggering 19- fighting winning streak since 2015.

The no. 12-ranked fighter is so far credited with scoring 24 wins in his career, of which 12 came via knockout, one via submission, and six via first-round finishes. 'Qazaq' has so far lost only twice since going pro back in 2014.

Ismagulov held the lightweight championship belt at M-1, defending it twice before ultimately vacating it to sign with the UFC.


Who handed Damir Ismagulov his first defeat?

Ismagulov made his professional debut in 2014, fighting for the Kazakhstan Mixed Martial Arts Federation. He made his first appearance against David Bacskai, defeating him via technical knockout in the first round of the match.

Since his debut win, 'Qazaq' was cruising on undefeated until he faced Ramazan Esenbaev at the M-1 Challenge 61- Battle of Narts, where he was handed his first defeat. The fighter suffered a unanimous decision loss at the hands of his opponent.
