The team was founded by the collaboration of David Gilliland and Bo LeMastus, both racing team owners back in 2017. They combined their respective teams - David Gilliland Racing and Crosley Sports Group - to form a new team and changed the name to DGR-Crosley after their collaboration. During 2018 and 2019, the team fielded Toyotas but was switched to Ford later in 2020.
After Johnny Gray was appointed the co-owner the team changed its name to David Gilliland Racing the following year. After this modification, the former owner Bo LeMastus started working in the marketing and sponsorship field of the team. The team's current name was formed with the prefix tri- and the word icon. It became effective after they moved to Toyota Racing Development in 2023, which they previously announced in 2020.
