Jeffrey Bruma: A Brief Biography

Jeffrey Kevin van Homoet Bruma, or just Jeffrey Bruma, is a Dutch professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Bruma was born on 13 November 1991 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. At 6 feet 2 inches, Bruma is a strong and tall defender who is also good at heading the ball. His presence is intimidating to any striker in the penalty area.

Background

Bruma started playing football at Feyenoord before joining Chelsea’s youth setup in 2007. He started playing regular football for the reserve team from the age of just 16. He continued playing for the youth sides, winning the FA Youth Cup. He also played for the national youth teams.

He has represented the following teams - Feyenoord, Chelsea, Leicester City, Hamburger SV, PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg, Netherlands, Netherlands U16,U17,U19, and U21.

Debut

Bruma made his professional debut for Chelsea on 2 December 2009 in the League Cup. He came on as a substitute for Juliano Belletti against Blackburn Rovers.

On 11 August 2010, Bruma made his international debut for Netherlands in a match against Ukraine that ended 1-1.

Rise to Glory

After being a regular for most of Netherlands’ youth teams, Bruma received a call up to the senior squad in 2010. In that squad were three other debutants - Jeremain Lens, Siem de Jong, and Ricky van Wolfswinkel. All of them including Bruma started the match against Ukraine which ended 1-1.

Bruma was a crucial part of the U21s, making 19 appearances for them under manager Cor Pot. He became one of the youngest Dutch players to play for the senior side at 18 years and 8 months.

Bruma played 11 friendlies, 7 World Cup qualifying matches, and 7 UEFA Euro qualifying matches. He scored his first and only goal for Netherlands against Latvia in a Euro qualifying match. The match ended 6-0 to Netherlands Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben(2), and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar(2) the others on the scoresheet.

Club Career

Having started at Feyenoord, Bruma was under Chelsea’s radar and was snapped up at the age of 15. In spite of showing a lot of promise, Bruma did not live up to the billing and had a tough time replacing defenders like John Terry. He was loaned thrice, to Leicester City once and Hamburger SV twice. He made just 4 appearances for Chelsea and clearly showed intent of leaving.

During the loan at Leicester, Bruma made 11 appearances in the Championship. He scored two goals and received a double yellow in one game. At Hamburger SV, he became a regular starter, playing 42 games in all competitions. He scored three and created two. The second loan spell to Hamburger SV sent him to the reserve side, where he made just 3 appearances and managed to score a goal.

In June 2013, Bruma signed for PSV Eindhoven from Chelsea. He spent three seasons there, racking up 129 appearances. His set-piece abilities helped him score 7 goals overall and create 5.

Three years later, Bruma signed for German top-flight club VfL Wolfsburg for an undisclosed fee. He currently plays there and is a solid centre back, starting almost every other match. He has played 34 games in all competitions so far, scoring one goal. Bruma has been struggling to achieve a start in the current season and has struggled with injuries, losing his place to Robin Knoche.
