Stoffel Vandoorne: A Brief Biography

Stoffel Vandoorne is a Belgian racing driver currently driving for McLaren Renault F1 team alongside double world champion Fernando Alonso as his team mate. He joined McLaren young drivers program in 2013, while he raced in GP2 for ART racing. He made his formula one debut with Mclaren in 2016 and has remained with the team ever since.


Stoffel Vandoorne is a Belgian racing driver currently driving for McLaren Renault F1 team alongside double world champion Fernando Alonso as his team mate. He joined McLaren young drivers program in 2013, while he raced in GP2 for ART racing. He made his formula one debut with Mclaren in 2016 and has remained with the team ever since.


Stoffel started his career in karting in the FIA KF2 series where he won the championship in 2009 and won 45000 Euros as a prize which helped him start a career in racing.

He went on to join the F4 Eurocup and won 6 races to win the championship as well and eventually drove in the Formula Renault where he took 8 podium finishes to finish third in the events. Vandoorne remained in the F4 Eurocup and drove for KTR only to leave for Kaufmann Racing. He lost the championship to Daniil Kvyat of Red Bull and scored almost 100 points more than their competitor.

Vandoorne went on to race in the Formula Renault 3.5 in 2013 for Fortec Motorsport. Mclaren signed Stoffel in their young driver programme in 2013Kevin Magnussen was the winner that season but Stoffel finished second behind the fellow Mclaren driver and also won at his home race of Spa Francorchamps.

ART signed Vandoorne for their 2014 season in GP2 where he was entitled to another second place finish overall behind Jolyon Palmer. He remained with ART for the duration of 2015 as well.

In 2016, Mclaren announced that Stoffel Vandoorne would be replacing Fernando Alonso at the Gulf Grand Prix at Bahrain after an injury caused from a crash in the previous race at Albert Park. he out qualified his teammate Jenson Button and finished 2 places ahead of him at 10th place. Stoffel was signed by Docomo Dandelion Racing in 2016 to drive a Honda where he managed to finish 4th in the overall season. In September of 2016, the team announced that Stoffel would replace Jenson Button and would race alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2017 season and was retained for the 2018 season as well.

He is currently 15th in the drivers standings after 6 races of the season with 8th place as his best finish and has 8 points overall.
