Sven Bender is a German footballer who plays for the German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. Bender joined TSV 1860 Munich in 2003. In 2009, he joined Borussia Dortmund, where he signed a contract that will tie him to the club until 2013. Bender is a former German youth international having played at all levels. At under-19 level, he was a part of the team that won the 2008 European Under-19 Championship. Bender made his debut for the senior team in a friendly match against Australia on March 2011. Bender's first call-up for the senior German national football team came in February 2011, ahead of a friendly against Italy in Dortmund, where he remained an unused substitute. Bender made his debut for Germany in a 2–1 loss to Australia. He is the twin brother of Lars Bender, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen.
