Diaz participated in the 2012–13 Cuban National Series as a player for the Naranjas de Villa Clara. At the age of 21, Diaz, together with an unidentified person and his boyhood buddy Leandro Linares, fled from Holguin, Cuba, to Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic in 2013. He had made two earlier attempts at defecting, both being apprehended and detained by the Cuban authorities. He signed a $300,000 contract with the Cleveland Indians in August.


In 2014, Díaz participated in the Class A-Advanced Carolina League as a player for the Carolina Mudcats. Díaz was named an All-Star in 2015 while playing with the Class AA Eastern League's Akron RubberDucks. Following the 2015 regular season, the Indians assigned him to the Arizona Fall League and then advanced him to the Columbus Clippers of the Class AAA International League in September. After starting the 2016 season with Akron, Díaz was promoted to Columbus, where he was awarded the International League Rookie of the Year.
