After a long period of speculations, Mean Girls finally returned with a 2024 remake, following along the same lines as the original film that starred Lindsay Lohan. The iconic film's new version is a musical adaptation that recasts all the significant characters and brings the story to a more contemporary setting.

With the popularity of the original Mean Girls, which starred the likes of Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey, there were always going to be comparisons when the new one came out.

As per preliminary critical analysis, the new film packs a punch in many ways, and though it was never expected to live up to the 2004 classic, it still has a lot to say and a lot to entertain.

With the film finally out, here are five big changes that the 2024 version made from the original Mean Girls.

Mean Girls (2024) vs. Mean Girls(2004): 5 major differences

1) Cady’s dad does not exist

Cady Heron's original version (played by Lindsay Lohan) had a father in the film. But in the 2024 version, the film omits the character, depicting Cady's mother as a single mom. The original character that was omitted was played by Neil Flynn.

While it does not sound like a big difference, it does add to the new Cady's (played by Angourie Rice) character background.

2) Regina has a layered relationship with Janis

The 2004 version of the film depicted a subtle tension between Janis and Regina George (played by Rachel McAdams in the original and Reneé Rapp in the new one). But the film failed to depict exactly what was wrong, especially with Regina's accusation of Janis being a lesbian.

The new film tackled the queer storyline with much more panache. It also added more backstory to the duo's relationship.

3) Coach Carr does not have affairs with students

One storyline that the new Mean Girls ditched was Coach Carr's various affairs with students, for which he was exposed at the end of the original film. This storyline did not age well, though it was put in for some comic relief.

However, the storyline did not appeal to newer audiences and was aptly removed from the new version. In the latest version of the film, Coach Carr is simply a very inept teacher.

4) Ms. Norbury is with Principal Duvall in the new film

Mean Girls never offered Tina Fey's Ms. Norbury a happy ending, with the chronically single math teacher needing to move forward with her story. But the new adaptation solved it with Ms. Norbury now dating Principal Duvall (Tim Meadows).

This is a welcome change that will surely appeal to the viewers.

5) Cady, Janis, and Damian’s iconic revenge plan is altered

In what may not be the best change, Mean Girls (2024) ditched the revenge plan that saw Janis and Damian cutting holes in Regina's shirt. Instead, it saw a new plan where the trio doused Regina in water in front of the whole school.

But the result has remained unchanged, with the school still embracing Regina's style and going for the wet look instead of tops with giant holes.

The giant-hole tank tops were an iconic part of the original film and will be missed in the new one.

The new adaptation has already premiered in theatres on January 8, 2024, and is currently available nationwide.
