June 2023 is looking to be an exciting month for HBO and Max subscribers, with the streaming platform preparing to release a slew of titles, both old and new. From dramas to comedies, there will be something for everyone to watch on HBO and Max.

While June 2023 will see the release of new titles like The Idol and Avatar 2, there will also be plenty of returning shows like The Righteous Gemstones, as well as the series finales of beloved shows like Succession and Barry.

Here are five HBO and Max releases to look forward to in June 2023.


The Idol, Avatar: The Way of Water, and 3 other titles releasing on HBO and Max in June 2023

1) The Idol (Season 1)

The Idol is a dark, twisted and dramatic series created by The Weeknd, Reza Fahim, and Sam Levinson of Euphoria-fame. The show is centered around Jocelyn, an aspiring pop idol who undergoes a nervous breakdown, resulting in her tour getting cancelled. To get her career back on track, Jocelyn gets into a dangerous relationship with Tedros, a self-help guru and the leader of a cult.

The Idol features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Lily-Rose Depp, The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, and Jennie Ruby Jane, among others.

The Idol will be available to stream on HBO and Max starting June 4.


2) Avatar: The Way of Water

The sequel to James Cameron's Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water will arrive on HBO and Max on June 7, 2023. The movie follows Jake Sully and his family who have rebuilt their lives and their clan following the invasion of Pandora by the RDA. When the re-established RDA returns to colonize Pandora, Jake and his family escape to the seaside, where they take refuge with the Metkayina tribe.

However, the late Colonel Miles Quaritch returns as a recombinant, or avatars who are implanted with the memories of deceased human soldiers. Quaritch's attempts to take his revenge on Jake leads to trouble for the sea tribes, as well as Jake's family. The movie follows the Sully family as they fight for their people and Pandora, despite the danger they face from Quaritch.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald return to their roles, along with Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver, who appears as a different character.


3) And Just Like That... (Season 2)

The spin-off series of the popular Sex and the City film franchise, And Just Like That... has been renewed for a second season. The show follows the lives of Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, as they navigate love, life, and friendship in their fifties. The show picks up eleven years after Sex and the City 2 (2010), where each character was shown settling down with their significant others.

Although Samantha's character is not featured in the show since Kim Cattrall chose not to reprise her role, the reboot series predominently revolves around the four women's friendship and the support they provide to each other, even as they transition from carefree young women to mature, older people.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis reprise their roles as the main leads, while Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, and Evan Handler return to play their characters from the original series.


4) The Righteous Gemstones (Season 3)

The Righteous Gemstones returns to HBO and Max for its third season on June 18, 2023. The show revolves around the Gemstone family, a wealthy and influential televangelist dynasty, as they navigate their lives filled with greed, power struggles, and scandals while managing their megachurch empire.

Season 3 of the show is expected to revolve around the Gemstone siblings as they finally gain control over the Church, learning first-hand the struggles that come with leadership, while dealing with the consequences that come with their extravagant lifestyle. Viewers can expect a lot of family drama, controversies, and scandals from the Gemstones in this season as well.

John Goodman, Danny McBride, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Skyler Gisondo, and Gregory Alan Williams star in this dark comedy series that delves into themes of faith, family dynamics, ambition, and the pursuit of wealth and power.


5) John Early: Now More than Ever

John Early's hilarious stand-up set arrives on HBO and Max on June 17, 2023. The comedy special will see the actor pretend to be the lead singer of a fake band called John Early and the Lemon Squares, in a musical documentary fashion. The mockumentary will also feature sketches, musical numbers and commentaries as the actor performs his hilarious stand-up set in front of a live audience.


All above-mentioned releases will be available to stream on HBO and Max in June 2023.
