No exact figure has been made publicly available, but according to Variety, Disney is said to have spent $350 million on the movie overall.

Even with that hefty price tag, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" from Disney, which cost $379 million, is still the most expensive film ever made. "Avengers: Age of Ultron," which cost Marvel $365 million, is in second place, and "Avengers: Endgame," which cost them $356 million, is in third. The second Avatar film's high cost and lengthy production were due to a variety of factors. The film's aesthetic beauty was made possible by “advanced motion-capture technology that Cameron used to reproduce every fluid movement and facial tic of his actors playing Na’vi characters,” Eliana Dockterman of Time Magazine said.

“For the sequels, Cameron wanted to use the same motion capture technology for actors while they were submerged underwater, an unheard-of feat that required years to engineer a solution.” The second and third films, which took three years to make, were also jointly filmed by Cameron. This, along with the post-production period, made for a total wait of 13 years.

When was Avatar 2 released?

"Avatar: The Way of Water" had its London premiere on December 6, 2022, and went on general release in the US on December 16, 2022, following several delays to the anticipated release date. Critics gave the movie favorable reviews, praising the visual effects and technical accomplishments while criticizing the plot and length of the running time.

The movie broke a lot of records at the box office and made over $2.311 billion in total, making it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time and the highest-grossing movie of 2022 and the COVID-19 pandemic era. It was ranked among the top ten movies of 2022 by organizations like the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review.

Among its many honors, the movie received a nomination for "Best Picture" and a win for "Best Visual Effects" at the 95th Academy Awards. The following Avatar movie is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024, and is currently in production.

How was Avatar 2 produced?

Cameron said in 2006 that if Avatar (2009) did well, he would think about making two sequels. He stated that the sequels would proceed according to plan in 2010 due to the film's widespread success. Initially, the sequels were supposed to come out in December 2014 and 2015. He incorporated certain scenes from the first film into future story sequels.

Cameron intended to start production on the sequels "once the novel is nailed down" and to shoot them back-to-back. He claimed that the sequels would broaden the scope of the universe while investigating additional Polyphemus moons. The first installment would emphasize Pandora's ocean and include more rainforest. He planned to use a deepwater submersible to film the Mariana Trench's floor for the sequel.

Cameron claimed in 2011 that he had only begun to create the ocean ecosystems for Pandora and the other worlds that would be featured in the narrative. The storyline would not be "strident" because the movie will focus on entertainment even though it will continue the environmental theme from the first one. In December 2009, it was announced that Jake and Neytiri's stories would continue in the sequels.

The humans were alluded to by Cameron as the story's main antagonists. In order to give the sequels a more realistic feel, Cameron announced in 2011 that he would shoot them at a frame rate faster than the industry standard of 24 frames per second. In 2012, Cameron first alluded to a potential third sequel; it was formally announced the following year. Cameron had originally planned to release Avatar 2 in 2015, but later that year, the release date was changed to December 2016, with the two additional sequels to follow in 2017 and 2018.

At CinemaCon in April 2016, Cameron made the announcement that four Avatar sequels would be produced concurrently. The budget for each of the four Avatar sequels is $250 million, for a total of $1 billion.

The first sequel was anticipated to be released in December 2017; this is because the writing process, which Cameron called "a complex job," caused the scheduled release dates for the sequels to each be delayed by a few additional years.

Who composed Avatar 2’s music?

Prior to his passing in a plane crash in June 2015, James Horner, the composer of "Avatar," had been announced as the franchise's music composer. According to reports in December 2019, Simon Franglen, who had previously collaborated with Cameron and Horner as a record producer, since "Titanic" in 1997, including "Avatar," had composed the score for the movie.

On July 29, 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water”'s scoring process formally started. Hollywood Records put the soundtrack album out on December 16, 2022. Four days later, an expanded score album with ten additional songs from the original score was released.

It was revealed in November 2022 that the movie would include the original song "Song Chord," which will be sung by Franglen and Zoe Saldaña. It was revealed the following month that Swedish supergroup Swedish House Mafia and Canadian singer The Weeknd would collaborate on the movie's original song, "Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)".
