Entertainment Weekly has verified that British director Toby Haynes will be leading a new Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures. The report states that the movie, described as an "origin story," was written by Seth Grahame-Smith, known for his contributions to various renowned projects such as Zombies, Pride and Prejudice.

The story portrays a time period many years before J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie, with Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, also playing a significant role in the film's production.

Director of Andor, Toby Haynes' upcoming movie comes after several setbacks in other projects

Toby Haynes, the director of Andor, is directing a new Star Trek movie being produced by Paramount. Fans should not confuse Haynes' project with the current work on Star Trek 4, which is intended to be the final installment in that film series and a direct sequel to JJ Abrams' Star Trek trilogy.

Abrams unveiled his plans for season 4, aiming to start production by the end of the year.

Several projects after the last franchise film, Star Trek Beyond (2016), have faced setbacks. The movie was directed by Justin Lin and featured Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Since then, quite a few projects have not materialized, including a movie idea by Quentin Tarantino.

Another project by Noah Hawley also didn't proceed. Now, Paramount is working on a new sequel film with director Toby Haynes and writer Seth Grahame-Smith, produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot. This film will explore a secret origin story, set decades before the 2009 reboot.

However, the brand remains strong with popular Paramount+ shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds. Under Brian Robbins' leadership, Paramount aims to capitalize on this success with several films in development. Toby Haynes, known for directing the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor, brings his expertise to the project, which is currently nominated for eight Emmys, including Best Drama Series.

The unique path of Star Trek 4: A separate endeavor in development

Star Trek 4 has been in the works for several years now. Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires wrote the script, with Lindsey Anderson Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet contributing a draft.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, it was revealed by Lindsey Anderson Beer that a couple of drafts were written before she had to leave for Pet Sematary.

Originally, Matt Shakman, known for directing WandaVision, was set to direct Star Trek 4. However, he later opted for Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot. Currently, a new director has not been selected.

Even though there haven't been new films in the past few years, the franchise has been flourishing on the small screen. Shows like Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds have garnered enthusiastic praise from both fans and critics.
