LiDestri Foods has issued a nationwide recall for select Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce jars over undeclared fish allergen concerns. It is feared that select 24-ounce jars of the sauce may contain undeclared fish allergens, namely anchovies. Individuals who are allergic to anchovies run the risk of experiencing severe to life-threatening allergies upon consumption of the recalled product.

Announced on May 17, 2023, the voluntary recall was initiated after the establishment received consumer complaints stating that the sauce containing anchovies was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of anchovy allergens. Further investigations into the matter indicated that the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in LiDestri Foods’ packaging processes.

As of now, neither LiDestri Foods nor the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have received reports of any illnesses or fatalities regarding the consumption of the products. However, food contaminated with fish (anchovy) allergens can often cause allergic reaction symptoms such as tingling in the mouth, dizziness, abdominal pain, light-headedness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fainting.

Packed in labeled mason jars, the recalled sauce products were sold at Wegman’s grocery stores in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Available for purchase between April 3, 2023, and May 16, 2023, the recalled red pasta sauce bears the UPC 077890222409 and is called Diavolo. The only expiration date of the Wegmans Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce product affected by the recall is March 31, 2025, with the code F0589.

Consumers with fish (anchovy) allergies are strictly advised not to consume the product as it could put them at risk of experiencing severe to life-threatening allergic reactions.
