A gang that sews razor blades into the tips of their hats and its intimidating leader, Tommy Shelby, are the focus of this gangster family epic, which is set in 1900s England. After serving in the British Army during World War I, Thomas Shelby and his brothers came back to Birmingham.

Steven Knight is the creator of the British historical crime drama television series Peaky Blinders. It is based in Birmingham, England, and recounts the crimes committed by the Peaky Blinders crime syndicate in the immediate years following World War One. An actual urban youth gang of the same name that operated in the city from the 1880s through the 1910s serves as the inspiration for the fictitious group.

The license to broadcast the program in the US and other countries was purchased by Netflix through an agreement with the Weinstein Company and Endemol. It was confirmed in January 2021 that the sixth series would be the final one, and a spinoff movie would come afterward. In 2022, the last season was televised.

Season 1

Birmingham's Small Heath in 1919. The Peaky Blinders, the most feared and dominant local gang, are led by Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy, Inception) and his family. They get their name from the habit of stitching razor blades onto the tips of their hats, and they eke out a living via illegal gambling, security work, and the black market.

However, Tommy has goals beyond just keeping the streets clean. When a shipment of firearms disappears from an armaments plant, he sees a chance to advance. Winston Churchill sends a brutal police commander from Belfast to establish order in an increasingly chaotic city and reclaim the weapons as competing gangs, Communist revolutionaries, and IRA Fenians swarm to Small Heath in search of the weaponry.

"Season One raised the lid on a world unseen and forgotten by history but alive and well in oral tradition," says writer and creator Steven Knight. “I drew on the recollections of my family to learn about the gangster-run, turf war-racked, Peaky Blinders-dominated streets of Small Heath, Birmingham. Tommy Shelby rode in on a dark stallion. He struggled with his recollections of the war, London gangs, his own father, and Special Branch's tenacious Major Campbell. In addition, he discovered grace and love. The first season's goal was to obliterate the British period drama model. Many folks were surprised by the music, which is nice.”

Season 2

The Peaky Blinders gang is thriving as the 1920s get underway. Thomas Shelby begins to extend his illicit activities into London, and his ascent puts him and his family in contact with fresh realms of excess and hedonism. In the meantime, a former foe has come back to Small Heath, Birmingham, seeking retribution. Shelby soon discovers that he has been assigned a position in a clandestine paramilitary operation, a job that would almost certainly result in his death.

Season Two demonstrated how many more tales there were to be told about Tommy Shelby and his family, living in these extraordinary times, by welcoming to the cast Charlotte Riley (Easy Virtue), Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones), Finn Cole (Animal Kingdom), and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) as the incomparable Alfie Solomons.

"Season Two saw the Shelby family start to broaden their empire and stretch their sway into corridors of power," says Steven Knight. Tommy was drawn to social horse trainer May Carlton, but Grace still had his heart. Love was the theme of this season, both good and horrible, and twisted beyond comprehension. Polly murders a guy and discovers he has a son. Tommy emerges from his own grave when Major Campbell passes away, a man beyond death. Peaky really found its footing at this point because it started to focus on characters who were actually victims of their own chaotic and uncertain fate rather than their own choices or personal histories.

Season 3

Thomas Shelby gets sucked into a web of international intrigue involving White Russians and a sinister organization known as the Economic League when he is approached by a covert organization on the day of his wedding. Shelby is confronted by powerful influences in every aspect of his life after being forced into the most outrageous crime of his tenure.

This incredible depiction of a family's adventure through British society gained new depths of emotional resonance with the addition of Paddy Considine (Dead Man's Shoes), Gaite Jansen (Line of Duty), and Kate Phillips as Linda Shelby to the cast.

According to Steven Knight, "I wrote about a significant character's death in Season Three. It was difficult yet vital to accomplish this. The Russian nobility in exile fail to appreciate Tommy, John, Arthur, and Polly and pay the price (no one ever learns). Tommy has come to realize that Alfie Solomons is the only actual conversation partner for him. However, the theme of this series was loss and continuing when there's nothing to live for.”

Season 4

It is January 1925. Tommy Shelby is a lonesome, distant person who is just concerned with his business. Tommy realizes that the Shelbys are all at risk of extinction when he gets a cryptic letter on Christmas Eve. Tommy leaves his country home as the adversary approaches and heads back to Small Heath, Birmingham, the only place he knows to be secure. Aidan Gillen, Jack Rowan, Charlie Murphy, Jessie Eden, and Adrien Brody, as New York Mafia leader Luca Changretta, all joined the cast of the series. Peaky Blinders' fourth season, which was the most action-packed one yet, earned them the Best Drama Series BAFTA.

Overcoming death was the theme of Season Four. John, Arthur, and Tommy always believed they had already passed on. They were invariably French spirits that had returned. One of them really died in this series, and Polly learned what the guys had known all along. Since everything is so pointless, you may as well be remarkable, as Francis Bacon once said.

Season 5

The 1929 Wall Street Crash rocked the world and caused chaos. Both luck and catastrophe may be found anywhere. Thomas Shelby understands that his reaction will impact not just the future of his own family but also the destiny of the entire country when he is contacted by a charismatic politician with a daring vision for Britain. But Tommy must battle his own demons as he gets ready to disrupt the new evil power that is endangering Britain.

"Season Five was about how the Shelby family became woven into the fabric of history," explains Steven Knight. “Additionally, the emergence of fascism was a topic. Tommy attempts to use his vast political skills to confront an evil that even he finds difficult to comprehend. However, Tommy is a horrible man, and he has to learn where the boundary between right and wrong lies. In this series, I wanted to imply that Tommy might, for the first time, believe he has a chance at atonement and that redemption might mean something to him. Furthermore, he discovers that his love for his wife and his children gives him the will to live. ”

Season 6

Steven Knight stated at the Birmingham Press Club on May 5, 2018, "We are absolutely doing [series] six." The series was supposed to start filming in March 2020, but the COVID-19 outbreak caused a delay.

Finn Shelby (Harry Kirton) is expelled from the family from one brother to the next for his part in bringing a traitor into the fold in the form of Billy Grade (Emmett J. Scanlan). Duke Shelby, Tommy's firstborn and heir, will be the target of Finn's revenge, and the Peaky Blinders will expel him as punishment.

Season 7

Following the revelation that the sixth series would be the final, Knight said that it had been decided to film a feature-length movie in place of a seventh television series, with additional related television series perhaps following, following the year-long production sabbatical in 2020.

When Peaky Blinders took the Returning Drama prize at the 2022 National Television Awards presentation, Knight said in his victory speech that filming would start in the spring of 2023.
