With the introduction of a new Nike Cortez silhouette, Nike is going all out this season. The Beaverton-based company has unveiled a number of exclusive versions to commemorate the model's historic 50th birthday, including the "Midnight Navy" and "SNKRS Day Korea," as well as special partnerships with brands like CLOT.

The latest addition to the line is the Nike Cortez Premium "Black," another highly sought-after hue that is here to give your look the update it needs.

The release date for the Nike Cortez Black is May 19, 2023, at 7:30 pm GMT. The new colorway is offered for a retail price of $100, which is slightly higher than the other variants of the shoe. These premium sneakers will be offered in women’s sizing options via the Nike’s SNKRS app and other partnering retail chains, both online as well as offline.

One of the most easily identifiable sneakers in the history of trainers is the Nike Cortez. When Nike first started out as Blue Ribbon Sports in 1972, this silhouette was their first track shoe.

Bill Bowerman, a co-founder of Nike and a renowned track and field coach at the University of Oregon, conceived the shoe. Bowerman set out to design a comfortable and reliable running shoe for road running and long-distance running.

Thanks to its cutting-edge design and functionality, the sneaker model quickly gained popularity among both runners and the general public. It also became a symbol of culture, particularly in Los Angeles, where it was embraced by a variety of subcultures, including gang members, skateboarders, and hip-hop musicians.

The Nike Cortez has been reimagined in various colorways and collaborations over the years. Most recently, the triple black colorway of the silhouette is being prepared for launch. The upcoming Nike Cortez Black is a sleek and simple version of the shoe that features a black upper. The description of the shoes on the SNKRS app reads,

“Warm weather doesn't mean the end of your commitment to black. Bringing edgy, high-end fashion to the streets, the icon now delivers the mood you love. From black suede to black leather to the black neoprene-like tongue, the timeless design comes decked out with the statement-making shade.”

It further continues,

“And let's not forget the reason this shoe's been a staple decade after decade—its classic retro appeal, sponge-soft midsole and heritage detailing keep everything you love about the original.”

This Cortez has an extra quality construction, just like the "Velvet Brown" that we previewed earlier this month. Supple suede reinforcements are wrapped around the lacing system, toe box, heel, and Swoosh, working on top of a smooth nylon basis.

The tongue tag as well as heel badge include "Nike" branding, and the lacing system features a brushed metallic dubrae that contributes to the shoe's opulent appearance. The modest style is completed by a slightly serrated midsole that has been embellished with juxtaposing white speckles for added depth.

If you are looking to cop a pair of the Nike Cortez Black, make sure to mark your calendars for the release date. The shoe will likely sell out fast, so don't miss your chance to own a piece of sneaker history.
