5 big names from the 90s who are vague memories today

Rick Rude

Lex LugerThe 90s was a great time frame for wrestling fans. Promotions like WWE, WCW, and ECW were at their best and wrestling was clearly main stream. Wrestlers were jumping from one promotion to another, all the companies were taking huge risks and in short, the battle for supremacy between these companies ensured some high-quality entertainment for the fans.During the rush, a lot of wrestlers were pushed to the top. Some were touted as future legends and given all the support they needed to reach that tag. However, certain superstars who stood out as main eventers in the 90s failed to stay relevant afterwards. And this list is going to take a look at those big names from the 90s that are not remembered much.

#5 Rick Rude

Rick Rude

Rick Rude is a tragic figure when it comes to the wrestling business. He had a great career that lasted nearly two decades and in that time frame, Rude went on to feature in all three promotions. His first major break came with WWE when he feuded with the likes of Ultimate Warrior, Jake Roberts, and Roddy Piper. He was also one of the original founders of D Generation X.

Rude then had a memorable spell in WCW as part of the Dangerous Alliance. He then got a shot at Ric Flair’s World Heavyweight championship, which he successfully won. Rude’s career spun off afterwards and at the age of 40, he passed away due to heart failure.

#4 Sid

Sid

For some reason or the other, almost all the promotions were high on Sid back in the 90s. He signed with WCW in 1989 and was immediately portrayed as the new member of Four Horsemen. He got his first major title shot against Sting later on but Sid was soon packed to WWE.

Vince McMahon also fed him with big names and two years later, he returned to WCW. After another couple of spells in WCW and WWE, Sid became a two-time WWE champion and a two-time WCW World Heavyweight champion. He main evented a handful of pay-per-views as well but the only thing that we remember Sid for is the nasty leg fracture.

#3 Ken Shamrock

Ken Shamrock

The wicked business mind of Vince McMahon was working overtime in the 90s. Somehow, he wanted to get rid of WCW and he was willing to break all the rules to do the same. One idea in particular that he found out was to bring in Ken Shamrock. Shamrock was an established MMA fighter and having him in the roster proved to be a big boost for WWE.

During his three-year stay in the company, Shamrock brushed shoulders with names like Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, The Rock, Goldust and a handful of other WWE superstars. Shamrock held the Intercontinental championship and the tag team championship in WWE and he became an NWA World Heavyweight champion when he went to TNA. He was also the winner of 1998 King of the Ring Tournament. Yet, Shamrock is a superstar who rarely gets talked about.

#2 Mr. Perfect

Curt Hennig

The modern day fans might know “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig as the father of Curtis Axel. However, they should not measure the legend with the scale that they use to measure Axel. After making his debut in 1980, Hennig went on to wrestle all the way to 2003. The peak part of his career came during the 90s and that is why he is in the list.

Hennig was known to be one of the greatest performers of his time and feuded with big names during his stay. He held the Intercontinental Championship twice in WWE and was the United States and Tag Team champion in WCW. He was a bit underrated back during his prime as well and that might be contributing to the current ignorance. Hennig passed away in 2003 due to acute cocaine intoxication.

#1 Lex Luger

Lex Luger

A two-time WCW World heavyweight champion, a Royal Rumble winner, Wrestler of the year in 1997, Most popular wrestler of the year in 1993, and the man who was touted to be the next big thing in professional wrestling. All these tags fill fit perfectly for Luger. His sculpted body and good looks made him an asset for promotions and they were willing to give him a push as well.

Luger constantly featured in the main event scene and at one point, matched the popularity of big names like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair. He was responsible for starting the Monday Night Wars as well but still, we remember Luger on minimal occasions.
