Bjorn Borg, the Swedish maestro widely considered to be one of the greatest in the history of tennis, has had many phenomenal performances at Wimbledon.

He has won the title 5 times in his career. What is even more astonishing is the fact that he was the Champion at Wimbledon for 5 consecutive years, from 1976 to 1980. Borg shares this record with Roger Federer.

In 1976, he won the event for the first time without losing a single set , a feat which hasn’t been emulated ever since.

The Swede ranks fifth in the list of male tennis players with most Grand Slam titles (11). Borg shocked the world with the announcement of his retirement at the age of 26, the reason being over exertion and burnout.

#4 Pete Sampras (USA)

Petros “Pete” Sampras is a former World No. 1 and one of the greatest of the game. Probably the most famous tennis player of the 1990’s, he is a 14-time Grand Slam singles champion.

Out of those 14 titles, 7 came at Wimbledon.

He won his first Wimbledon title in 1993, beating Jim Courier in the final. Sampras was known for his serve and volley game and employed an attacking strategy from the baseline.

He went on to win the rest of his 6 Wimbledon titles in 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

#3 Steffi Graf (Germany)

Steffi Graf, a legend of the game, has a mind boggling 22 Grand Slam singles titles to her name. She is widely considered to be the greatest female player to have ever graced the game.

Graf won a total of 7 Wimbledon titles.

She won the titles in 1988-89, 1991-93, and 1995-96, dominating the tournament like very few have.

Her first Wimbledon title came in the year 1988, and in the process she became the first and only tennis player to achieve the Calendar Year Golden Slam, by winning all the four Grand Slams singles titles and the Olympic Gold in the same year.

The German is the only player to have won each of the four Grand Slams at least four times, emphasising her versatility on all surfaces.

Roger Federer is probably the most famous tennis player of all time. He is regarded to be the greatest to have ever played the game, by pundits and fans alike.

Federer has the most number of Grand Slam titles in the Open Era with 17 titles, in the men’s division. The Swiss maestro also has the distinction of playing in each of the Grand Slam finals at least five times.

Federer has been the most successful male player in Wimbledon in the Open Era. He has won a record 7 titles in Wimbledon, a record he shares with the great Pete Sampras.

The 33-year-old has also reached the Wimbledon finals 9 times, the most by a player. His journey towards greatness began at the Wimbledon, where he won his first Grand Slam title in 2003.

He went on to win the Wimbledon title five times in succession, starting from 2003 to 2007. He won the last two of his seven titles in 2009 and 2012.

This legend who has been immortalized by fans and critics alike considers Wimbledon to be his favourite tournament.

Any list that talks about the greats of tennis is incomplete without Martina Navratilova. Legends, historians, journalists, and critics have considered her to be the greatest singles, doubles, and mixed doubles player to have ever lived.

Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 Grand Slam doubles titles, and 10 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.

She is the greatest tennis player to have ever graced the courts of All England Club, Wimbledon winning the title 9 times, the most by any player in the history of the tournament.

Navratilova reached the Wimbledon singles final a total of 12 times, which is a record in itself. From 1982 to 1990, she consecutively played in the Wimbledon finals on 9 occasions.

The American also has a run of six consecutive titles, the best performance by any player at a major event.

Having the best figures and producing some of the best performances at Wimbledon, Navratilova is undoubtedly the best player to have ever played at the event.
