5 reasons Sting will not win the WWE World Title at Night of Champions

Sting gets a rousing reception on Monday Night Raw

Sting with the WWE World Heavyweight ChampionshipSting is back in WWE and the Icon is out for vengeance on Seth Rollins. For months, Sting has sat back and watched Rollins make a mockery of the industry’s most storied championship while proclaiming his stature as WWE’s greatest champion of all time. The vigilante has heard enough though and now Seth’s day of reckoning is at hand coming up on September 20’s Night of Champions. But despite how many fans would love to see the former NWA and WCW champ hoist the third of the epic triple crown with the WWE World Title, it’s likely not happening. While anything is possible in Vince McMahon’s company, there are too many variables to prevent the strap from changing hands. It’s not that Sting is not worthy of the championship of course. He’s done it all in his 30 year career; he’s worked main event matches all over the globe, he’s a 14-time world champion and he was the face of a once powerful pro wrestling company. He has earned the respect of fans and his peers alike.Of all the legendary stars to step through the ropes before and after Sting, there’s no one with quite the level of professionalism and accomplishment that he has. Wearing the gold of the world’s top wrestling company now that he’s surely close to the end of his ring career is the ultimate reward and he deserves it.But deserving it and actually doing it are two entirely different things. Sting’s contributions to the business and his hall of fame career cannot be denied, but they do not guarantee a title win over Seth Rollins. This may or may not be Sting’s farewell tour but either way, he will end it without having won the coveted WWE world title.

#5 His part-time status may not change

Sting gets a rousing reception on Monday Night Raw

If anyone in the WWE locker room has earned the right to dictate his work schedule, it’s Sting. 30 years and icon status will do that for you. Unlike others that have left to pursue endeavors outside the business, Sting is a lifer and he likely always will be.

But the WWE world heavyweight champion should be a full-time talent. The belt is too important and the focus is too intense to relegate the champ’s work to pay-per-views only. This may have been the model WWE followed when Brock Lesnar held the strap, but that is a much different situation.

Lesnar’s part-time schedule was explained using his prize fighter status as the reason. Paul Heyman spoke in his absence and the effort was made to keep Lesnar part of the product. However, fans were split on whether or not this was a good idea. Many felt Brock should have been used more, that WWE needed its champion and the belt was losing its value.

The debate raged nearly the entire time Brock held the title but once Seth Rollins took the belt at WrestleMania 31, the debate ended. Rollins brought the championship back to WWE and that’s where it should stay. Though Sting would surely treat the title with respect and WWE would likely use him more, the Icon would probably not come back on a full time basis.

Sting’s title run would obviously be just a way to get from point A to point B and he would be just a placeholder in the meantime.

#4 Brock Lesnar is left out of the equation

Brock Lesnar stares down Seth Rollins

When Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania 31, he did two things; robbed Roman Reigns and ticked off Brock Lesnar. While Roman will surely have other chances at main event stardom, The Beast Incarnate is likely not to forget anytime soon.

Rollins became a marked man after that and even though Lesnar left after Mania, fans knew he would be back for revenge at some point. Lesnar did indeed return and his title match with Seth at Battleground was supposed to be the night that he destroyed The Authority’s chosen one and reclaimed what was his.

But The Undertaker ruined Brock’s chances of regaining the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and that means Seth once again got away. While Lesnar did not get redemption like he wanted, the fact is the cat and mouse game between he and Seth was highly entertaining.

Watching Rollins attempt to escape harm as Brock hunted him became must-see TV. But if Sting wins the belt at Night of Champions, then Lesnar is left out of the picture. Brock does not necessarily need to be the champ, but the issue would become where does he go from here? Another program with Seth would be a bit pointless without the belt and the list of legends Lesnar could work is becoming very sparse.

Brock is good for ratings as well as pay-per-view buys but if he has nothing to do, there is no reason to watch him. Brock Lesnar the man is surely willing to do business despite what the plan is. Brock Lesnar the Beast will not stop until Seth Rollins is out cold and the belt is back around his waist.

#3 The Authority is indestructible

The Authority is an unending storyline it seems

CM Punk stood up to them and was quickly shut down. The Rhodes brothers stood up for each other and lost their jobs in the process. Daniel Bryan beat their leader and his cohorts at WrestleMania 30, winning the championship and turning the tide against them. But despite all of this, The Authority is still kicking and nothing can stop them.

Even Sting himself was responsible for the downfall of Triple H and company back at Survivor Series in 2014, but that wasn’t enough either. Time and again, The Authority has proven its resiliency and at this point, the group is practically bullet proof. If the Icon were to defeat Seth Rollins at Night of Champions, it will not be the end of The Authority and it certainly would not be the end of Rollins.

The Authority would do everything in its power to get the belt back from Sting and that is exactly what would happen.

Suddenly, the feel good story of Sting becoming an NWA/WCW/WWE triple crown winner would be over and the belt would be right back in The Authority’s hands. If the plan involved Sting winning the belt and The Authority imploding in the process, then the storyline would have a satisfying end. But WWE has teased the end of Triple H’s group far too many times to actually do it now and no one would believe it anyway.

There is no drama in running an angle that returns everything back to the way it began. Sting could not stop them the first time and fans are convinced The Authority is here to stay; this is not the formula for a believable or viable championship angle.

#2 Seth Rollins\'s title run should not end

Seth Rollins as the WWE World Champion

Seth Rollins is a champion much in the same vein as Chris Jericho during his undisputed WWF title run. Y2J was egotistical, he was arrogant and he was cowardly. In other words, he was a heel. He was also very good in the ring and proved he was much better than he was being given credit for.

The major difference between the two right now is that Seth continues to impress despite what situation he finds himself in. The booking has been much better for him than it was for Jericho, as WWE surely recognizes the talent Seth is.

Rollins delivers every time he’s in the ring and no matter how much he may be hated or criticized for his character, he proves he deserves his spot every time he steps through the ropes. Seth represents the best WWE has to offer and the championship should stay around his waist.

Losing to Sting would be a major career event for Rollins and one that he would never forget. There is no shame in doing the honors to a legend and WWE would certainly treat the moment with respect, for Sting’s sake as well as Seth’s.

But that is not enough reason for Rollins to lose at Night of Champions. He’s done too much and worked too hard to drop the championship now. Sting has done a lot for the business and deserves all the respect in the world for it, but he is not the future of the company, Seth is. Giving Sting the belt may be a quick fix to sky rocket the ratings but Seth is the man and WWE knows it. Taking the belt from him now is not the right move.

#1 The face of WCW cannot top WWE

Sting as WCW champion

When WWE overcame chief rival WCW, the wrestling world was in awe. Finally, Vince McMahon’s company emerged from the biggest fight it had ever seen and had proven its superiority over its most dangerous competition. Vince owned it all at that point and fans knew the business would never be the same again. It was a moment that will not be forgotten; WWE will make sure of it.

Nearly 15 years have gone by since WCW shut down and WWE is still talking about it, as well as making money from it. The Monday Night Wars began as a DVD documentary and now it’s a featured series of stories on the WWE Network. Backstage interviews, exclusive behind the scene moments and era-defining matches highlight the specials and fans can’t seem to get enough of it.

Neither can WWE.

Vince McMahon takes great pride in eliminating WCW and to imagine he would allow the man that represented them to hold his championship seems impossible. It’s no disrespect to Sting of course as there has been no indication of animosity toward him. But this storyline will likely not end with the face of WCW becoming the face of WWE, despite how much fans may want it to happen.

Only three men came from Ted Turner’s company with a WCW title run to become the WWE champion; Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and The Big Show. Goldberg, Booker T, Chris Benoit and Big Show held WWE’s version of the world title, but that was not considered the primary championship.

WWE’s current title is Vince’s title and Sting may not be the man he wants to wear it. Sting lost his WrestleMania debut in a bout billed as WWE versus WCW; in that case and this one, it’s all about pride as well as the ultimate bragging rights over the company that dared to challenge Vince McMahon.

Sting was Mister WCW and WWE will make sure fans don’t forget that either.
