5 talking points from India's 79-run defeat to Bangladesh in the first ODI

Coming into the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series, Indian captain MS Dhoni had asserted that Bangladesh were not to be taken lightly in ODI cricket anymore. Well, Dhoni's assertion proved accurate on Thursday as Bangladesh registered a comprehensive 79-run victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series.Opting to bat first, Bangladesh managed to give India an imposing target of 308 from their 50 overs, courtesy of both Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan hitting half-centuries. In reply, none of the Indian batsmen got going, with the exception of Rohit Sharma, as they were bundled out for 228 from 46 overs to succumb to a heavy defeat at the hands of the hosts. Here are 5 talking points from the match:

#1 Dhoni-Mustafizur on-field collision

Matches between India and Bangladesh have seen a fair share of controversies in recent times, their recent World Cup clash being a classic example, and the first ODI was no different in this regard. In the 25th over of the Indian innings, Dhoni ran into Mustafizur while taking a run and literally shoved him out of the way with his forearm, prompting the left-armer to walk off the field with immediate effect.

While Dhoni argued to the umpires that Mustafizur deliberately came in his way and tried to block him, the incident did look quite ugly and led to both of them being fined a considerable portion of their match fees.

#2 Bangladesh register their highest ODI total against India

Bangladesh, courtesy of their brilliant display with the bat, registered their highest ever total against India in ODI cricket. Coming up against an Indian bowling attack that had performed admirably in the World Cup, one would have expected the hosts to be circumspect especially at the start of the innings. However, they took the attack to the Indian bowlers right from the outset and rattled them in the process.

Openers Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar, in particular, deserve great credit as they got the hosts off to a brilliant start, stitching together a partnership of 102 in less than 14 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan, with the help of some useful contributions from the middle order, carried on the good work to help Bangladesh notch up their first 300+ total against India in ODI history.

#3 Mustafizur Rahman\'s ODI career begins with a bang

There had been quite a lot of hype surrounding Mustafizur Rahman going into the first ODI, and the 19-year-old justified it as he finished up figures of 5 for 50 to help restrict India to 228 all out. While not blessed with extreme pace, his left-arm angle and clever use of variations should hold him in good stead going forward.

Besides his bowling figures, an extremely impressive aspect of his display was the fact that most of his wickets were that of top-order batsmen, including Rohit Sharma who was dismissed courtesy of a well-disguised slower delivery despite being well-set on 63 from 68 balls.

#4 Virat Kohli fails to step up

After a disappointing World Cup campaign where he failed to step up in the big games, Virat Kohli would have been hoping to get back amongst the runs with a big score in the first ODI, especially after failing to make an impact in the one-off Test. However, his patchy form continued as he was dismissed after scoring one off four deliveries.

Considering the prolific form that Kohli has been in pretty much throughout his ODI career, it can be safely said that he is going through one of those phases every player inevitably goes through, having not even scored a half-century in any of his past 8 ODI innings.

#5 Umpiring howler against Shikhar Dhawan causes controversy

In the 9thover of the Indian innings, umpire Rod Tucker adjudged Shikhar Dhawan to be out even before the catch had been taken by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim. While Dhawan, who was batting on 15 at the time, had clearly got an edge, Tucker should have waited for Rahim to complete the catch. As it turned out, the 28-year-old dropped a fairly routine catch and gave Dhawan a reprieve.

To make matters worse, the Bangladesh fielders attempted to run Dhawan out when he started walking off having seen the umpire raise his finger. However, good sense prevailed as Tuckers decision was reversed and the 29-year-old carried on batting, before being eventually dismissed for 30 off 38 balls.
