5 WWE Romances that went sour backstage

Lex Luger and Miss Elizabeth

Chyna and Triple H were one of the most popular pairings in WWE historyThat WWE is a scripted show is one of the world’s most open secrets. But we aren’t here to chastise the unrealistic nature of the franchise due to two reasons: 1. Some of the scripts are actually bloody good (no pun intended) and 2. Let’s face it scripted or not, we love it.However, even though everyone’s favourite wrestling show is scripted, some events do cross the threshold over to realism especially if romance is the subject concerned. We’ve seen real feeling creep in, in numerous reality shows and WWE is no different. That said, let’s take a look at 5 WWE Romances That Went Sour Backstage.

#5 Lex Luger and Elizabeth

Lex Luger and Miss Elizabeth

Miss Elizabeth holds the distinction of being a part of not one but two WWE romances, the second of which you’ll read about later. After her divorce from Randy Savage, Elizabeth was named as manager of Lex Luger in 1999 and the pair soon developed romantic feelings for each other.

Although the pair never married, they began a live-in relationship which soon turned ugly after reports of a domestic violence incident which left Elizabeth with two bruised eyes. Less than a month after the domestic dispute incident, Elizabeth was found dead by Luger on May 1, 2003 due to a fatal mix of prescription drugs and vodka at the age of 42. Elizabeth’s death affected Luger badly and was the catalyst in him turning his lopsided life around.

#4 Matt Hardy and Lita

Lita and Mat Hardy

Another unforgettable romance that graced the WWE was that between Matt Hardy, popularly known as one-half of the sibling wrestling duo the Hardy Boyz, and fellow wrestler Amy Dumas aka WWE Diva Lita.

The pair dated for close to five years before Hardy broke off the relationship after discovering that Dumas was having an affair with fellow wrestler Edge. Hardy made the affair public which led to his firing from the franchise, but was rehired as WWE wanted to capitalize on the situation. Even though the wrestlers aren’t part of the WWE anymore the drama that surrounded them will go down in history.

#3 Randy Savage and Elizabeth Heulette

One of WWE’s most memorable pairings was the one between Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage and Miss Elizabeth. The couple were married since 1984, but Elizabeth acted as his manager on the show since 1985 and even famously had a scripted marriage in 1991 on SummerSlam. T

he pair met when Elizabeth was working as a camera operator on International Championship wrestling which was organized by Randy’s father Angelo. However after nearly a decade of marriage the pair divorced in 1992 with Savage stating in an open letter that their breakup was nobody’s fault. Savage and his ex-wife remained on-screen together for the sake of their WWE characters, but off screen they both pursued relationships with other partners.

#2 Stone Cold and Debra

Stone Cold and Debra

One of the WWE’s most iconic employees also had an affair to remember. Austin fell head over heels in love with Debra Marshall, the wife of former Chicago Bears footballer Steve McMichael, back when she was working as Jeff Jarett’s sidekick in the late ‘90s. The pair were soon married in a chapel in Las Vegas in 2000.

However, the marriage wasn’t one that lasted very long, and the pair divorced three years later after a hysterical Debra called the police when Austin beat her up in a drug fuelled rage. Debra later auctioned her wedding ring with the proceeds going to an organization that helps victims of domestic abuse while Austin is now married to his fourth wife.

#1 Triple H and Chyna

Chyna and Triple H

One of the franchise’s most infamous romances has to be the one between Triple H and Chyna. The duo, who were the most popular wrestlers of their respective genders, were not only a couple onscreen but off it as well after developing romantic feeling for each other during Chyna’s time as HHH’s on-screen bodyguard.

However, things took no time to go south after Triple H’s on-screen marriage to WWE honcho Vince McMahon’s daughter Stephanie back in 2000. The pair soon fell in love and were wed in 2003 much to the shock of Chyna who claim she knew nothing about the affair, only discovering it after stumbling upon Triple H’s love notes to Stephanie in his briefcase.

Triple H and Stephanie are happily married and even have a family together, while Chyna was soon shunted out via fax by Vince and was almost eradicated from WWE’s radar.
