Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea: Five talking points from the Community Shield

Diego Costa Chelsea
Chelsea sorely missed Diego Costa in the final

Arsenal overcame Chelsea to seal the Community ShieldAnd then the voodoo was no more. Arsene Wenger finally managed to exorcise his demons and get one over Jose Mourinho at the fourteenth time of asking. The victories broke not only a personal spell for the Frenchman, but also for his team. The Gunners had not only failed to record a victory over their London rivals since 2011, but also failed to score over a span of minutes that had crossed five hundred until Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain buried home the winner. While Petr Cech’s new team went home with the plate (the shield to be exact), it was certainly not handed out to them as a slow slumbering Chelsea came to life in the second-half. However, an equally defiant Arsenal backline was there to thwart any passing danger. While chances did present themselves to Mourinho’s team, a lack of application at the fateful moment made life miserable for the Blues. While many might consider, this to be just the final rehearsal for the season ahead, it’s never too bad to start off your season with a trophy winning game at Wembley. Here are the five main talking points from today’s feisty encounter at the banks of the Hudson.

#1 Chelsea find the worth of Diego Costa

Diego Costa Chelsea
Chelsea sorely missed Diego Costa in the final

The performances from Loic Remy and Falcao didn’t really do anything to ease the pain that any Chelsea faithful might have over the unavailability of Diego Costa. Jose Mourinho will certainly be spending a worrisome seven days before the clash against Swansea kicks off their Premier League campaign this season.

Loic Remy in the first half and Falcao in the second offered very little in terms of providing a real threat to the Arsenal backline. Loic Remy certainly did cross the from which Ramires should have buried home the equalizer, but except for that moment the pair of them failed to produce any moment of real danger except.

The only other moment when any of the Chelsea forwards came into the game was when Falcao was involved in starting a melee at the dying stages of the game after holding onto the ball.

Are Chelsea fans again seeing shades of Torres?

#2 Arsenal simply wanted it more

Per Mertesacker Arsenal
Arsenal players looked like they wanted to prove a point against Chelsea

Arsenal came to Wembley and did what they did exactly a year back. They burst off the tracks and took the game to the defending champions. Although lacking the fluidity we normally associate with Arsene Wenger as its manager, Arsenal showed that this might be the year, they have finally got ridden of their soft underbelly.

Their passing and movement were much more better than the Blues, who seemed to have been stuck in a mid-summer night’s dream in the opening phases. While the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott taking the game to the aging back four of Chelsea, the likes of Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic seemed to suffer from a lack of inspiration.

Proving a point to the defending champions seemed to be looming large on the minds of every Arsenal player. Chelsea certainly did roll their sleeves up and went on the offensive, the touches at the vital moments betrayed them time and again.

#3 Petr Cech will prove vital for Arsenal throughout the season

Petr Cech Arsenal Chelsea
Petr Cech proved what he’s worth in the Community Shield

Seeing Petr Cech in an Arsenal jersey for neutrals is still weird. But for the Gunners, it’s a sight for sore eyes. You can safely say that for the first time in many years, Arsenal fans will have peaceful nights knowing that the Czech international remains standing between their posts.

Cech pulled off his first spectacular save in the match when he palmed away a free-kick from his ex-teammate Oscar which was destined for the top corner. Whilst the Arsenal defence has been quite impressive in recent seasons, the presence of the new man in between the posts, seems to settle the nerves of Wenger and co. even further.

Mourinho was certainly against the notion of Cech joining their Premier League rivals, and every game seems to make the Portuguese man even more at unease.

#4 Chelsea needs a wake up call

Chelsea
Chelsea may need reinforcements ahead of the season

Not many Chelsea fans would worry too much about the loss today, but there were certainly some bad undercurrents that needed to be rectified at Stamford Bridge. The midfieldseemed to be moored in a far off dream with Hazard unable to continue in the vain that he had left last season and Cesc Fabregas nowhere to be seen.

Whilst Ramires was popping up everywhere, his runnings, sometimes erratic, left to much to do for Nemanja Matic, who seemed to be off colour as well. Kurt Zoumas presence at left-back meanwhile cried out for transfer activity from Chelsea.

#5 The midgames are just beggining

Jose Mourinho Arsene Wenger
The two are set to clash over the course of the season from the looks of it

Jose Mourinho certainly didnt leave much to the imagination that he was onto mind games from the get go as he appeared out of the dugout. The change in his usual attire from the blazer to the training shirt for this game seemingly was a taunt to Arsene Wenger as to how much this game meant for him.

His antics didnt stop there as he threw the runners-up medal into the crowd, refused to shake hands with Wenger and was again his usual self in the post-match press conference. His bold and scathing remarks on both the game as well as his opponents will certainly have left his mark on the people he wanted.

The Special Oneaccused Arsenal of leaving their philosophy in the dressing room and went on to say the best team lost and the most defensive team won.Arsene Wenger had his moment as well when he decided to ignore Mourinho and retreat back to the dressing room following the final whistle.Lets the games begin I say.
