Can Dhoni make history in Australia?

While this might come as a surprise to many, the Australia-India series, which starts on Tuesday will be the first bilateral ODI series between the two countries in Australia. All of India's ODIs against Australia in Australia have been part of a series involving three or more teams. While that is one record that is certainly going to be broken in the series, there are a few more that look likely to be broken over the course of the next couple of weeks. While Rohit Sharma may, on current form, improve his already impressive record against Australia, that is a possibility rather than a probability. Here are 5 records that can be broken in the Australia-India ODI series.

#1 MS Dhoni becoming the fifth Indian to cross 9,000 ODI runs

MS Dhoni

Can Dhoni make history in Australia?

India's limited-overs skipper, who recently became only the sixth Indian batsman (after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Azharuddin and Yuvraj Singh) to cross 11,000 List-A runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, will have a chance to add another record to his name.

Dhoni, who will start the series on 8,832 ODI runs, only needs 168 runs in the series to become only the fifth Indian after Sachin, Ganguly, Dravid and Azharuddin to cross 9,000 ODI runs.

The 34-year-old scored over 200 runs at an average of 53 in the ODI series against South Africa, which India lost 3-2 and also finished the Vijay Hazare Trophy strongly, after a poor start for Jharkhand.

Although he didn't turn up a noteworthy performance in the two warm-up matches, the Indian skipper has time and again proven that he is the man for the big occasions and India will be hoping he leads the side with the bat in hand.

#2 Fastest Australian batsman to 2,000 ODI runs

Aaron Finch

Can Finch cap off his impressive numbers with a record?

Although constantly under the shadow of his opening partner David Warner, Aaron Finch's numbers as an ODI opener are surprisingly good. In fact, Finch has a better ODI average than the southpaw, while both have relatively similar strike rates.

Despite playing fewer ODI matches than Warner, Finch has more centuries, which might come as a surprise to many, who see the 29-year-old as an inconsistent player for Australia.

That couldn't be farther from the truth and that is evident by the fact that the right-hander has a chance to become the fastest Australian batsman to 2,000 ODI runs. The current record is held by David Boon, who took 52 innings, while the all-time record for fastest to 2,000 runs is held by Hashim Amla, who got there in just 40 innings.

Finch, who is on 1,865 runs in 50 innings, needs 135 runs in two innings to become the joint-fastest Australia batsman to 2000 ODI runs. If he reaches that mark in a single innings, he will have the record to himself, which given his average of 45.87 against India in eight innings with four half-centuries, doesn't seem out of the question.

#3 Quickest to complete 7,000 ODI runs

Virat Kohli

Will Kohli have more reason to celebrate?

Although Sachin's record of most runs in ODIs is a long way away for the current crop of cricketers, it doesn't seem to be stopping them from breaking some of his other records, that are within reach.

AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli and Hashim Amla seem intent on breaking the record for the fastest to get to 5,000 runs, 6,000 and 7,000 ODI runs. Amla currently holds the record for the fastest to 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 runs.

AB de Villiers recently became the quickest to 7,000 ODI runs, when he reached the milestone in 166 innings, Kohli is now in touching distance of breaking that record as he starts the series on 6,831 runs in 158 innings.

India's Test skipper only needs 169 runs in the series to beat AB's record, which given his outstanding record in the format, is well within his reach.

#4 Australia\'s unbeaten ODI record at home

Steve Smith

Can Smith maintain the winning run without his star performers?

The record for the most consecutive ODI wins is held by Australia, when they won 21 straight matches in 2003 - a run that included their victorious 2003 World Cup campaign.

Although that record isn't going to be under threat any time soon, one record that might be is Australia's current winning streak at home in ODIs.

Since their defeat to South Africa at the WACA in November 2014, Australia have won 14 Consecutive ODIs at home. But injuries to Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins and the retirement of Mitchell Johnson means Australia have a new-look bowling attack that is short on experience.

Against a settled Indian batting line-up there is a possibility that their current 14-game winning run at home will be broken, even if India's overall win-loss record in Australia in ODIs is far from impressive.

#5 Ashwin and Jadeja crossing 150 ODI wickets

Ashwin and Jadeja

Can Ashwin and Jadeja break Sachin’s record

Despite producing some world class bowlers, it is surprising to note that India only have 11 bowlers who have taken more than 150 ODI wickets, with Anil Kumble topping the list with 334 scalps.

Sachin Tendulkar, India's leading run-scorer in Test and ODIs, surprisingly is at No.11 and he is followed by two bowlers who will have a chance to break the 150-wicket barrier in the series against Australia and perhaps even overtake him.

With 144 wickets, Ravindra Jadeja is in 12th place, just ahead of his partner-in-crime, Ravichandran Ashwin, who has 140 wickets.

After their impressive performances in the Test series against the Proteas, the pair will come into the ODI series high on confidence and will be looking to become only the 12th and 13th Indian bowlers to cross the 150-wicket mark in ODIs.

Should one or both of them have an exceptional series, they even have a chance to climb into the top ten, as Manoj Prabhakar (157) and Ashish Nehra (155) in ninth and tenth place aren't a million miles away.
