10 players who deserve better ratings in FIFA 16

EA Sports’ FIFA series will undoubtedly go down as one of the best gaming franchises of all time, with its latest edition, FIFA 16, releasing to positive reviews. FIFA 16 brought in several new things to the franchise, including the introduction of the new training mode, improved player values, upgraded loan deals, the ability to choose a pre-season friendly tournament, as well as the addition of female players for the first time in the tournament’s history. However, despite all the revolutionary changes, one must not forget that the developers are only human at the end of the day, and are prone to errors when it comes to the rating of the players. Sometimes a player performs better than he did during the game’s development, which makes his current rating look silly. With that in mind, let’s take a look at 10 players who deserved better ratings in FIFA 16.

#10 Riyad Mahrez

The Algerian youngster has really blossomed for Leicester City this season and his 8 goals in 13 appearances have made him one of the best wide men in the league. Mahrez’s performances on the wing have been key to Leicester’s sensational form this season and his massive development could see him become a world class player in no time.

The 24-year-old’s performances have already attracted the attention of the big boys, with Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal reportedly interested in acquiring his services in January. Needless to say an increase in ratings, which stands at 73 in FIFA 16, is called for.

#9 Jamie Vardy

This Premier League season has seen quite a few revelations, the best of them being Leicester City and their star striker Jamie Vardy. 13 goals in as many games has made Vardy, who equalled Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record of goals scored in 10 consecutive Premier League matches, one of the most in-form players in the league as well as Europe.

He is the chief architect of Leicester City’s phenomenal league position this season. Keeping his achievements in mind, a rating of 71 of FIFA 16 seems grossly unjust and should go up a couple of notches in the near future.

#8 Dimitri Payet

The Frenchman’s excellent displays for Marseille earned him a place on the Ligue 1 Team of the Season for the 2014/15 campaign. And Payet has successfully brought his terrific form to West Ham this season, with five goals in 14 games, making him a key part of their resurgence under Slaven Bilic.

West Ham have looked considerably weaker in his absence, due to an injury he picked up against Everton – highlighting his massive role in the team. The 28-year-old currently commands a rating of 81, which should definitely increase should he continue to perform as brilliantly as he has this season after he makes a return to the side.

#7 Yohan Cabaye

Two disappointing seasons with Paris Saint-Germain caused a drop in ratings for this highly talented Frenchman. But a move to Crystal Palace, where he has linked up with his former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has lifted his spirits and he is now back to his plundering best.

The 29-year-old has taken centre stage at Palace and currently boasts of 24 tackles, which is one of the highest in the league. A rating of 79 is understandable due to his poor seasons with PSG, but a move up to the 80s would be perfectly fitting in the future.

#6 Eric Dier

The young Englishman may have played for the first time in his homeland after two seasons in Portugal, but it didn’t look like it fazed him at all. And he has convinced everyone that he has what he takes to be a top-class player in the future.

Although traditionally a defender, Dier has been converted into a defensive midfielder by Mauricio Pochettino this term and has been nothing short of excellent in that role, with his recent performance against West Ham a perfect example of his evolution.

Dier is the fulcrum of the team along with Harry Kane and Dele Alli, which makes a perfect case for higher ratings in the future.

#5 Hector Bellerin

After such an impressive debut season with Arsenal, it is really disappointing to see Hector Bellerin afforded just a 74 rating on FIFA 16. The pacy right-back was a real revelation last season and has now successfully claimed the right back position as his own.

However, the folks at EA have seemingly ignored the massive leaps and bounds the player has taken and have still rated him as though he is a debutant. What is more glaring is that Mathieu Debuchy, who Bellerin ousted from right back spot, commands a rating of 80 despite being 30 years old and barely getting a look-in at Arsenal.

#4 Mauro Icardi

This man was the top scorer in the Serie A last season, with an incredible tally of 22 goals – making his rating of 79 on FIFA 16 one of the worst gaffes of the game. What’s even more ironic is that the Argentine graces the cover of the Italian version of FIFA 16, along with his compatriot Lionel Messi.

Icardi is blessed with astute tactical awareness along with a lethal eye for goal, making him one of the best front men in Italy and possible one of the best in Europe in the near future. Why EA chose to rate him so lowly is a mystery, one that will hopefully be rectified the next time.

#3 Antoine Griezmann

The young Frenchman was second only to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the La Liga scoring charts last season. But that didn’t seem to have any effect on the developers at EA.

Griezmann, who scored 22 league goals last season, is touted as a star of the not so distant future and will only get better at Atletico Madrid under the watchful eye of Diego Simeone.

The 24-year-old has 7 goals in 16 appearances this season, and should have been rated at least an 84 compared to his current rating of 83.

#2 Chris Smalling

Granted, Smalling’s less than impressive rating of 79 seemed absolutely justified considering his lacklustre 2014/15 season, during which he was infamously labelled ‘stupid’ by Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal for getting himself sent off during the Manchester Derby.

But he looks like a whole new player this season, and is rightly considered the rock of the United defence, much like Rio Ferdinand once was. The new three-year contract which Smalling signed this April looks absolutely justified now.

He can easily become a world class centre back if he continues to develop as rapidly as he has been developing this season. An upgrade into the low 80s in the player ratings wouldn’t seem far fetched for Smalling.

#1 Harry Kane

One name that immediately pops to mind when talking about some of the most glaringly underrated players on FIFA 16 is that of Tottenham sensation Harry Kane. 31 goals in 51 appearances, including 21 in the Premier League alone saw him named as the PFA Young Player of the Year as well as claiming a place on the PFA Team of the Year.

He also managed to get a call-up to the England national team and scored on debut.

Despite all his phenomenal achievements, Kane was only a measly 78 rating on FIFA 16, which is extremely unfair. The 22-year-old is back to his best again this season, and fully deserves an upgrade in ratings – especially since he is on his way to becoming a Tottenham legend.
