Game of Thrones: If the Premier League was played in Westeros

LEGOlas

In the Westeros Premier League, you either win or you lose three pointsGame of Thrones fever was at its peak in May and June and it would be a shame if it does not touch the world’s most popular football league – the English Premier League. Ever wondered what it would be like if Premier League clubs were prominent houses of Westeros?Which house would each club represent from the Seven Kingdoms? Which players and managers resemble the characters in George R R Martin’s series the best? Here is a list which tries to draw some parallels between Game of Thrones and the EPL.

#1 Manchester United - The Lannisters

The resemblance between the Lannisters and Manchester United goes beyond the red colour they share. After Tywin Lannister (Sir Alex Feguson) left, the house (club) has been in a bit of disarray.

The big money transfer failures of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao makes Ed Woodward look more like Cersei Lannister. Having said that, they do have a vast amount of wealth at Casterly Rock (Old Trafford) with them which can be of great help in forming alliances (buying players).

In Jamie Lannister (Wayne Rooney), they have one of the best fighters in Westeros. It now remains to be seen if Kevan Lannister (Louis van Gaal) can bring this club back to its glory days.

#2 Liverpool - The Targaryrens

Seven hells, where do I start? The two conquered and dominated Westeros (Premier League) once upon a time for pretty long with the help of Aegon The Conqueror (Bill Shankly). However, they are now lost somewhere in the wilderness with the rise of the Lannisters (Manchester United).

Currently, they are plying their trade in Mereen (Europa League). No one could have foreseen this back in their glory days. The club’s very own Rhaegar Targaryen (Steven Gerrard) fought valiantly but failed. Daenerys Targaryen (Brendan Rodgers) divides opinion but has shown some promise.

With Drogon (Daniel Sturridge), Rhaegal (Philippe Coutinho) and Viserion (Jordan Henderson) by their side, will they conquer the Iron Throne (Premier League) again?

#3 Arsenal - The Starks

Its fair to say honour (good football) hasn’t always served them well and has often got them killed. Gone are the days when they had a fortress like Winterfell (Highbury) where they spent their glory days.

It looks as though they lack a killer instinct which the other big houses have. They have also been betrayed by the likes of Petyr Baelish (Robin van Persie) who joined the Lannisters (Machester United) after forming an alliance with Starks.

Having said that, they are still a big house and are trying to find their way after years of struggle. They do have their Ned Stark (Arsene Wenger) with them, so all is not lost.

It remains to be seen where he can take them with Bran (Mesut Ozil – like Bran he can see what others can’t), Arya (Alexis Sanchez) and Sansa (Santi Cazorla) on his side.

#4 Chelsea - The Tyrells

Lady Olenna (Jose Mourinho) has made sure they grow strong and remain one of the major players in Westeros. Mourinho’s tactics, like Olenna’s, are smart and has helped the club maintain its stature.

Although Mace Tyrell (Roman Abramovich) has made some dubious decisions, overall he has contributed in the growth of the house. In Loras Tyrell (Eden Hazard), they can boast of one of the best fighters (players) of Westeros and in Margaery Tyrell (Diego Costa) they have a person who very well knows where the target is.

Their wealth along with Olenna’s shrewdness will make sure they have a major say in the ongoings of Westeros for years to come.

#5 Manchester City - The Martells

Well, to begin with they hate the Lannisters (Manchester United) like anything. Their power stems from their wealth and having brilliant fighters in their ranks. They are one of the biggest and most powerful houses in Westeros.

The slickness of the Sand Snakes – Tyene Sand (Sergio Aguero), Obara Sand (David Silva) and Nymeria Sand (Samir Nasri) often keeps opponents worrying and perplexed. The raw strength and fighting capabilities of Areo Hotah (Yaya Toure) provides yet another dimension to their impressive army.

However, there doubts still linger over the man in charge - Doran Martell (Manuel Pellegrini). Whether or not he can continue to manage this impressive army is yet to be seen.

#6 Tottenham Hotspur - The Greyjoys

Like the Greyjoys, Spurs have always wanted to achieve more than what they are capable of. We wonder what madness makes them believe that they can win the Premier League, let alone conquer the North (North London).

They have an uneasy relationship with the Starks (Arsenal) and have always been fighting with them for power in the North. Theon Greyjoy (Emmanuel Adebayor), who grew up with the Starks (Arsenal) is now a lost cause. If they are to reach anywhere, Harry Kane (Asha Greyjoy) is their only hope.

Although Euron Greyjoy (Daniel Levy) might have a trick or two up his sleeve, I wouldn’t bet on him just yet.

#7 Referees - The Nights Watch

You know nothing, Howard Webb

These are the guardians of the realm; they protect it but are hardly given any credit. And they are often blamed for taking sides of some houses.

It's not an easy job, but they are often ignored by people. Time and again they have to deal with wildlings (divers, rash tacklers) and have to bring them to justice. The men of the Nights Watch are divided into three orders:Rangers (on field referees), Stewards (linesman) and Builders (Fourth officials).

Rangers are the ones who usually have the most difficult task of the three and have to deal with the wildlings more often than the others.
