5 times the wrong superstar won at WrestleMania

Mr.Perfect’s unbeaten streak came to an end at WM6

A great Mania endingAnother Wrestlemania season is upon us and the WWE seems to be have dug itself into another hole with the main event. With the fans still not cheering for the face Roman Reigns and part-time wrestler Triple H being the defending champion, it might just take something like what Seth Rollins did during last year’s WrestleMania to save this year’s as well. While there have been WrestleManias that finished off gloriously like the Ultimate Warrior winning the title from Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin beating Shawn Michaels, there have been stinkfests as well. Many a time has the wrong person won at Wrestlemania and the WWE has had to suffer the consequences. This list takes a look at the top 5 instances of the wrong wrestlers getting pushed.

#5 Brutus Beefcake ends Mr.Perfect\'s streak

Mr.Perfect’s unbeaten streak came to an end at WM6

Curt Hennig had returned to the WWE in 1988 as an arrogant heel, introducing his ‘Mr. Perfect’ moniker. Coupled with interesting promos and segments, Perfect had all the goods to become the WWE’s next main event star.

He would go on to have victories over Bret and Owen Hart and had a feud with the WWE Champion Hulk Hogan as well. Something that added to his character was his long unbeaten streak that stretched a year. Even though he had been pinned by Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior in house shows, it was never acknowledged on T.V.

So as Wrestlemania 6 came along, people expected that Hennig’s unbeaten streak would end – but nobody expected the guy to end it would be Brutus Beefcake.

The match proved that Perfect could carry anyone in the ring and is a true testament to the late legend’s talent that Beefcake was made to look as strong as he did.

#4 Triple H beats Randy Orton - Wrestlemania 25

Randy Orton should’ve won the WWE title at WM 25

There should have been no doubt about it – Wrestlemania 25 should have been all about the Viper.

Randy Orton had begun an enviable hot streak in the weeks prior to the Royal Rumble. He would punt Vince McMahon, beat up and punt Shane McMahon, RKO and kiss Stephanie McMahon and do pretty much whatever he wanted – including winning the Royal Rumble to earn a world title shot.

The fans were getting behind the rowdy third generation superstar who was unveiling his Viper persona. The story line was to have Orton go over at the expense of the entire McMahon family.

But Vince’s son-in-law Triple H had other thoughts. The Game would successfully defend his WWE title against Orton at the main event of Wrestlemania as a sort of justice for Orton’s vile actions – the only problem was that nobody really wanted to see Orton lose.

The very next Pay per view, Orton would deliver an RKO and a punt to Triple H to take home the WWE title and end the feud – could this not have been done on the grandest stage of ‘em all?

#3 Chris Jericho beats Edge - WrestleMania 26

Not the best move!!

Come Wrestlemania 26 and Edge was riding a huge wave of momentum. The Rated R Superstar had made an unexpected early return from injury and had won the Royal Rumble to a raucous reception.

It seemed like the seeds had been planted for Edge to battle the World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker at the main event of WrestleMania. But Taker would battle Shawn Michaels in HBK’s final ever match instead and Edge was left in limbo.

Enter Y2J.

Now, Jericho vs Edge was and will always be a feud that would keep the viewers engaged. But the only problem was that after his twin World title wins a couple of years back, Jericho was not really pushed that well in 2010. When he beat the Undertaker in an Elimination Chamber match in the final PPV before ‘Mania, it felt like a fluke.

It also did not help that his title match with Edge was booked monotonously. It seemed every single week Jericho would fall victim to the Spear and it seemed a foregone conclusion that Edge would walk out with the World title at Wrestlemania.

But Jericho would win the match with a Codebreaker and then would get Speared through the announce table. Y2J would drop the title the next week to Jack Swagger and both him and Edge would move to SmackDown within the next month, leaving Swagger to main event RAW.

In hindsight, it seems better to have let Edge go over at ‘Mania and have a sustained run as the Champion in Smackdown which he would eventually do in under a year. Swagger’s championship reign would not be memorable and the WWE would play hot potato with the World title before putting it on Edge again.

#2 Triple H beats Booker T - WrestleMania 19

HHH would beat Booker T at WM 19

Raw’s main event for WrestleMania 19 was Triple H defending his World Heavyweight title against Booker T.

The build-up to the match was marred by controversy as a promo had Triple H say that people like Booker T were not championship material, with many taking the comment to have racial insinuations.

People wanted Book to win the match and the title and were understandably displeased when Triple H pinned Booker clean with a Pedigree in the middle of the ring. Just as in the case of Rob Van Dam, WWE erred in handing over the baton to another superstar while one was at the peak of his popularity.

#1 Brock Lesnar ends the Undertaker\'s undefeated streak

Lesnar’s greatest WWE moment

The biggest of them all.

The Undertaker’s WrestleMania unbeaten streak was as or more prestigious than a championship match itself. While many would have expected that the chance to break the streak would be given to a wrestler on the verge of superstardom, Vince McMahon decided to bestow that honour upon a part timer.

Brock Lesnar had been booked as a beast ever since he returned to the WWE and him beating the Undertaker at WrestleMania 30 would have made a lot of sense – if Lesnar was open to wrestling every week in the WWE. But Brock makes only pay-per-view appearances in a wrestling capacity and there was nothing much to be gained by letting Lesnar beat the Undertaker.

Taker should have won the match and dropped his streak to someone better-suited to serving the WWE long term. But McMahon was said to have been concerned with Taker’s physical condition prior to the match and felt that he would not have another WrestleMania match in him – hence the decision to make him lose to Brock.
