AJ is the most successful student of Rick Michaels

There are certain things that you should know about StylesAJ Styles has been in the news for quite some time due to his rumoured association with WWE.After his glory days in TNA, this is the first time that AJ is getting such widespread international attention even though he put together classics in New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor. Styles appearing at WWE would be nothing short of spectacular and there are endless possibilities.Though he has been a major star in the independent circuit and TNA, inside the WWE bubble, the knowledge about AJ Styles is pretty limited. While we know most of the WWE superstars like the back of our palm, there are many things that we still do not know about AJ Styles and here is a look at them.

#8 The successful kid from the batch

AJ is the most successful student of Rick Michaels

After deciding to choose the professional wrestling path, AJ Styles went on to train under Rick Michaels.

The name Rick Michaels is unlikely to ring any names, so for the sake of introduction, he was a member of the original ECW. After an average career as a wrestler, Rick went on to become a trainer and he trained a long list of wrestlers.

However, from that long list, only AJ styles made it big. The other wrestlers that Rick trained are Jimmy Rave, Azrael, Sal Rinauro, Seth Delay, Slim J, JC Dazz, Jason Blackman and some others. AJ showed a natural talent in the game and went on to become a big thing from a batch that barely made it.

#7 Personal life

The middle name of AJ’s first son is taken from the real name of Christopher Daniels

AJ Styles is a strong Christian believer. In fact, he sees God above his family and is pretty open when it comes to the same.

He married a schoolteacher named Wendy and the couple has three sons and a daughter. The first one – named Ajay Covell Jones, was born in 2005 while his second son Abbey Jones was born in 2007. His third son, Albey Jones was born in 2009.

His daughter was born in 2014 and he named her Anney Jones. He has a tattoo on his torso marking the birth dates of his three children. And another interesting fact is that the middle name of his first son, Ajay, is taken from the real name of his friend and fellow professional wrestler Christopher Daniels.

#6 A great tag team wrestler

Tomko and AJ styles

For the most part of his career, AJ Styles wrestled as a singles wrestler. And we recognize him mostly for his lone wolf gimmick, but the thing is, AJ Styles is a great tag team grappler as well

He has won numerous tag team titles and that too, with different partners. To be precise, he has won six tag team champions with six different tag team partners. This includes four NWA Tag Team Championship and Two TNA Tag Team Championship.

The tag team partners of AJ Styles include Jerry Lynn, Abyss, Christopher Daniels, Kurt Angle and Tomko. AJ Styles settling as a tag team wrestler in WWE would be a big mistake, but later on, he could take up the role.

#5 PWI best wrestler of the year

He had a great year in 2010

The Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Top 500 Wrestlers is a great scale to know how a particular wrestler performed in a year.

Over the years, some great names have topped the list, and AJ styles achieved the same feat in 2010. 2010 was a great year for AJ Styles in TNA and he overcame the likes of John Cena, CM Punk, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Batista, Undertaker, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Kurt Angle, who were the other wrestlers in the Top 10.

Being selected as the top wrestler in the entire world by the prestigious PWI is not a small thing. Five years later, Styles might not be fast and agile as he used to be, but Styles could still deliver a classic.

#4 The Bullet Club cycle

AJ Styles and the bullet club

The motive for this list was the rumoured move of AJ Styles to WWE.

According to the speculations, WWE is going to launch a Bullet club-like faction in the company with Finn Balor at the helm. The interesting part is, both AJ Styles and Finn Balor were leaders of the Bullet Club.

Now, for the ones who do not have an idea what the Bullet Club is, it is a major heel faction in Japan just like NWo in WCW.

Finn Balor was the initial leader of the faction but when he moved to WWE, New Japan Pro Wrestling brought in AJ styles as the new leader. So now that AJ is making his way to WWE, it would be interesting to see how WWE will play out the storyline with two potential leaders for the faction. In a worst case scenario, they could bury the whole history and start fresh.

#3 Is a former WCW and WWE star

Most of the new age wrestling fans know AJ Styles as the superstar who came up thanks to TNA.

To an extent, it is true. However, before making it big in TNA, AJ spent his time in WCW and WWE. AJ was booked as a promising young talent during the dying days of WCW. The company’s death, however, derailed the momentum of AJ and he was left without a proper job.

He then found a place in the WWE roster where he wrestled in a few dark and televised matches. The match he had with The Hurricane was a standout one among the lot. Styles then moved to TNA and there, he received the push that he deserved.

#2 Rough childhood, mowing lawns and driving ambulance

He had a tough childhood

Just like most of the wrestlers out there, AJ Styles struggled a lot during his pre-wrestling days.

He had a tough childhood as his father was abusive and alcoholic. Poverty doubled the troubles and Styles got into college thanks to a wrestling scholarship that he earned. He then left college to pursue professional wrestling after he saw his friends trying it out. It was a gamble and apparently the gamble paid off.

To support his training; Styles did a lot of odd jobs that included mowing lawns and driving ambulance. Now, it’s funny to know that someone in America got their lawns mowed by AJ Styles.

#1 In the elite six

AJ Styles is the first American IWGP champion after Lesnar

AJ Styles is a big star in Japan. His recent run in New Japan Pro Wrestling was the proof for this and there, Styles became the IWGP Heavyweight Champion.

He was the first non-Japanese wrestler to win the IWGP heavyweight title after Brock Lesnar won it back in 2005. It took almost a decade for a non-Japanese wrestler to win the title and NJPW rested the responsibility on AJ Styles.

Apart from Lesnar and Styles, only four other non-Japanese superstars have held the title. They are, Salman Hashimikov, Bob Sapp, Scott Norton, and Vader. And all these reigns happened back in Golden Era of wrestling, meaning that the achievement of Styles is something that needs to be appreciated.
