Frank Lampard was born on this day in 1978

1978: Birth of Frank Lampard, an English professional footballer, who plays as a central midfielder for Chelsea and the England national team. Lampard is Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer.

2000: Eidur Gudjohnsen was signed by manager Gianluca Vialli following two productive seasons at Bolton Wanderers.

2007: A brace from Juan Roman Riquelme secured a sixth Copa Libertadores for Boca Juniors.

Cricket

1999: Pakistan were demolished by Australia in the World up final. Pakistan were bundled out for 132 and Australia smashed their way to an eight-wicket victory with a massive 29.5 overs to spare.

1954: Birth of Allan Lamb, a former England cricketer and captain who played for the first class teams of Western Province and Northamptonshire, the latter as an Overseas player.

1939: Birth of one of India’s quickest bowlers. Ramakant Desai was just 5ft 4ins tall and he took the Ranji Trophy by storm in his first season, with 50 wickets at an average of 11 in 1958-59.

1979: England booked a place in the final for the first time with a thrilling nine-run victory over New Zealand at Old Trafford.

1981: Birth of Taufeeq Umar, a Pakistani cricketer who was a regular Test opening batsman for three seasons, before being dropped ahead of the 2004–05 season.

Boxing

1967: Muhammad Ali convicted of refusing induction into armed services.

Tennis

1953: Birth of Raul Ramirez, a retired Mexican professional tennis player. He was active during the 1970s and 1980s, and is regarded as one of the great all-around players of the modern era.

1963: Birth of Matt Anger, an American former professional tennis player. He won one singles and two doubles titles during his career.

1969: Birth of Malivai Washington, a former professional tennis player from the United States. He reached the Men’s Singles final at Wimbledon in 1996, won 4 titles and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 11.
