The Colombo Kings are a Colombo-based franchise participating in the inaugural edition of the Lankan Premier League (LPL) 2020. The much-awaited T20 tournament in Sri Lanka will be having on display the players from five different teams including the Colombo Kings. They will be playing the tournament opener against Kandy Tuskers on November 26.
The Kings have a couple of former national captains in their leadership group. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal have played international cricket together for quite a few years and also have had the experience of leading the teams across formats. Mathews has been named as the skipper of the Colombo Kings for the 2020 edition.
Their experience will come in handy in the T20 competition and help the local youngsters to practice and perform in the right direction. They also have Isuru Udana in their squad, who was crucial for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the recently concluded season on the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The likes of Dushmantha Chameera and Jeffrey Vandersay will get a suitable platform to showcase their skills to the national selectors yet again.
The Colombo Kings have signed established T20 players like Andre Russell for LPL 2020. He brings in tons of experience of playing the shortest format of the game in various tournaments across the world. Apart from the experience, he brings in the X-factor that will be crucial for the Colombo players in the competition.
They had also managed to rope in Faf du Plessis, but he later made himself unavailable citing personal reasons. They have also got a couple of Indians, Manvinder Bisla and Manpreet Gony, who have played in the earlier editions of the IPL. Bisla has registered a century in an IPL Final and it can’t get bigger than that apart from the T20 World Cup for a player to perform on the big stage.
Gony has been a part of the successful Chennai Super Kings squad under the leadership of MS Dhoni. He might play a huge role in Kings’ bowling department.
Ravinderpal Singh from Canada will be playing in the upcoming edition of the LPL and the fans must keep an eye out for him in the tournament.
Former Australian cricketer and coach Dav Whatmore is a part of the Colombo Kings’ coaching set-up.
