Record eight-time champion Federer has had more than his fair share of final defeats at Wimbledon. And none has been more painful than the 2019 title showpiece match where the Swiss arrived at two championship points at 8-7 40-15 in the fifth, only to be thwarted by his old nemesis Novak Djokovic.

The defeat denied Federer a record extending 9th Wimbledon and a 21st Grand Slam title as it marked the fourth time the Swiss failed to get over the line in a title match at SW19.

11 years since Nadal ended Federer's five year reign at Wimbledon in a pulsating 2008 final which ended in near darkness, Djokovic beat the Swiss in consecutive finals in 2014-15 as Federer looked to break a tie with William Renshaw and Pete Sampras's mark of seven titles.

A record eighth title for the Swiss duly arrived in 2017, but heartbreak laid in store for the genial Swiss two years later.

All of the key match stats on the day went Federer's way but not the match itself as Djokovic became the first Wimbledon champion in 71 years to have saved multiple championship points.
