Emotional Del Potro holding the US Open trophy

5-times US Open champion Roger Federer was beaten by Juan Martin Del Potro 3-6, 7-6(7-5), 4-6, 7-6(7-4), 6-2 in the 2009 US Open final. The 2009 US open is the first and the only Grand Slam title claimed by Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine played one of the best tournaments of his career. He demolished Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.

Federer was aiming to become the first ever player to win a sixth consecutive US Open title in the Open era. But Del Potro shocked Federer to win his maiden major title.

Federer was just 2 points away from leading 2 sets to none in the second set at 5-4 and 30-0, but Del Potro stepped up and won the game. He then took the set to the tiebreaker and won the tiebreaker to make it 1-1.

Federer won the third set and it looked like the Swiss will carry on this momentum and go on to win his 6th major title at the Flushing Meadows but Del Potro had other plans. He again won the fourth set in the tiebreaker taking the match to the final set 7-6.

Del Potro looked in complete control in the final set. He played furiously and never gave Federer a chance to come back and won the set quite easily 6-2.

Del Potro had his best moment and got the full appreciation of his talent for the first time in his career when he won his first ever Grand Slam tournament at the Flushing Meadows.
