Over 60 matches took place on Day 4 of the Australian Open. With this, the second round of matches of the men's and women's singles has come to an end.

From tomorrow, the third round of singles matches will begin, along with the mixed doubles first round and doubles second round.

Elina Svitolina of Ukraine kicked things off on Rod Laver Arena today and she registered an easy straight-sets victory over Viktória Kužmová, winning the match 6-4, 6-1.

The match of the tournament took place shortly after that in which Milos Raonic overcame Stan Wawrinka in 4 hours and 1 minute - the longest match Raonic has ever played in his career. He pulled out the big guns, striking his serve and forehand sweetly, and outhit Wawrinka in four tie-break sets.

The Swiss won the first set but the 28-year-old Canadian battled hard to win the next three. The scoreline was 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 7-6(11), 7-6(5) in favour of Raonic.

He now moves into the third round where he will face Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France, who defeated Hyeon Chung today in four sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Kei Nishikori was involved in another five-set encounter, this time against 39-year-old big-serving Ivo Karlovic. Nishikori won the first two sets but then lost the next two, with the Croat coming up with big serves exactly when he needed them.

The fifth set went to the tie-break, where the Japanese prevailed 10-7. The final scoreline read 6-3, 7-6(6), 5-7, 5-7, 7-6[10-7] in his favor.

Alexander Zverev was also involved in a five-set encounter, against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, in the penultimate match of the night session on Margaret Court Arena. Just like Nishikori, Zverev also won the first two sets only to lose the next two.

However, he dominated the final set, winning it 6-1. The final scoreline was 7-6(5), 6-4, 5-7, 6-7(6), 6-1 in his favor, and he will take on local favourite Alex Bolt in the third round on Saturday.

Bolt defeated Gilles Simon 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 in a 5-set epic, much to the delight of the crowd.

Alexei Popyrin, another young Aussie, moved into the third round as his opponent Dominic Thiem retired due to an injury. The Aussie was leading 7-5, 6-4, 2-0 when Thiem decided to call it quits.

In the final match of the night session on Rod Laver Arena, Novak Djokovic took on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a repeat of the 2008 final. The World No. 1 wasn't tested much by Tsonga as he prevailed in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

Djokovic will take on Denis Shapovalov in the third round; Shapovalov overcame Taro Daniel in straight sets earlier today.

Meanwhile, David Goffin, Borna Coric, Fabio Fognini, Pablo Carreno Busta, Daniil Medvedev and Joao Sousa all moved into the third round as well.

In the women's section, Serena Williams put on a dominating performance against World No. 79 Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, winning the match 6-2, 6-2 in slightly over an hour. She will take on Dayana Yastremska next.

Simona Halep, on the other hand, put on an incredible show against Sofia Kenin, winning the match despite being a set and a break down. She won 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Halep will next take on Venus Williams, who defeated France's Alize Cornet in three sets. The winner of the Halep-Venus match could potentially take on Serena in the fourth round.

The final match of the night, which went on well past midnight, was also full of drama as Garbine Muguruza overcame a strong challenge from Brit Johanna Konta in three sets. The Spaniard won the match 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, Karolina Pliskova and Elise Mertens all won their respective 2nd round matches and have moved on to the 3rd round as well.

The bottom half, which consists of players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Angelique Kerber to name a few, will play their third round matches tomorrow.
