The quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2019 began today with the bottom half playing their matches in the men's and women's singles.

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal qualified for the semis from the men's singles while Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins qualified from the women's singles.

Come tomorrow, January 23, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will take on Kei Nishikori in their quarter-final encounter in the night session on Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic found it slightly tough against Daniil Medvedev in his fourth round encounter but pulled through in four sets. He dropped a set against Denis Shapovalov in the third round as well. Prior to that, he defeated Mitchell Krueger and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets in the first and second rounds respectively.

On the other hand, Kei Nishikori has played three 5-setters so far and on all three occasions, he fought back from 2 sets down to win against Ivo Karlovic, Kamil Majchrzak, and Pablo Carreno Busta in the first, second, and fourth rounds respectively. The only match he won in straight sets was against Joao Sousa in the third round.

Djokovic and Nishikori have faced off 17 times in the past, with Djokovic winning a whopping 15 times. Nishikori has failed to defeat the Serb in their previous 14 encounters. The last time he won was in 2014 at the US Open semi-finals.
