In his landmark 100th match at Flushing Meadows, Federer was slow off the blocks against Damir Dzumhur, dropping his first two service games to fall behind 0-4. The Swiss recouped one of the breaks but was powerless to stop the Bosnian from taking the first set.

That marked the first time Dzumhur had taken a set off Federer in three meetings. Federer was quick to respond though, breaking the Bosnian twice in the second set to even the match at a set apiece.

Federer rode a break of the Dzumhur serve in the third set and survived multiple break points on his serve in the eighth game to see off the set 6-3 and take a two-sets-to-one lead.

Dzumhur struggled to keep pace with his opponent and dropped serve early in the fourth set. He couldn't get the break back as Federer remained firm on serve to complete a 3-6 6-2 6-3 6-4 win.

The win was Federer's 19th in as many second-round appearances at the US Open, and he improved to a staggering 70-1 in Grand Slam second-round matches; Federer's only second-round reverse at a Grand Slam happened at Wimbledon in 2013 against Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.

The five-time US Open champion now awaits the winner of the second-round match between Frenchman Lucas Pouille and Daniel Evans for a place in the second week of Flushing Meadows for the 18th time. Federer is a combined 4-0 against Pouille and Evans.
