Second seed Roger Federer faces the 35th ranked Marton Fucsovics in the quarter-finals in his quest for a record eighth title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. A title this weekend will not only help him taste more success in the desert but will also end the agonizing wait for the much-coveted 100th career title for the Swiss maestro.

A year after skipping this event, Federer has returned to Dubai and has won a couple of matches on his way to the quarter-finals. However, both those wins have been far from convincing. In both his face-offs with Philipp Kohlschreiber and Fernando Verdasco, the 20-time Grand Slam winner inexplicably suffered a lapse, conceding the middle set before recovering to win in three.

It's a pattern Federer would like to get rid of. His opponent, Marton Fucsovics has been making rapid strides this season that saw him reaching the final in Sofia which he backed up with a quarter-final appearance at Rotterdam. Clearly, the 27-year-old Hungarian is hitting the ball with a lot of poise and confidence, something that is evident from his straight-set wins in his first couple of rounds in Dubai.

Roger indeed has the head-to-head advantage having won their only encounter at the 2018 Australian Open. But with Fucsovics in sizzling form, Federer needs a clean performance as another lapse could put the 37-year-old in a spot of bother.
