Looking back at the 4 times Federer and Djokovic have met at the Australian Open

Having won just 6 of their previous 19 matches, Djokovic met Federer for the 20th time in the semifinals of the 2011 Australian Open.

Djokovic was coming off a resounding defeat to Federer at the 2010 ATP Finals, after having saved a match point in the US Open semifinals to record his second Grand Slam match win over the Swiss maestro in six matches.

In a competitive opening set where neither player was able to break serve, Djokovic took a one set lead by clinching the ensuing tiebreak courtesy some powerful baseline play. The defending champion Federer was not in a mood to roll over without a fight though.

The then 16-time Grand Slam champion overcame an early break in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Not for the first time though, Federer rued not serving out a set against Djokovic as the Serb took a two lead.

Federer now needed to do an encore of the feat he accomplished against Gilles Simon in the second round, when the Swiss recovered a two set deficit. But the big difference this time was the opponent across the other side of the net.

Djokovic had the first break in the third, only for Federer to break back. But the usually unflappable Swiss, struggling to rein in his unforced errors, lost serve again which brought the match to its conclusion.

Djokovic would go on to beat Andy Murray for his second Grand Slam title and second title at the tournament, in a banner season which would see the Serb as the newest World No. 1.
