Producing one of his best performances against Federer, Djokovic took the lead (23-22) for the first time in the pair's epic rivalry with a win in the 2016 Australian Open semifinals.

Having committed a whopping 100 unforced errors in a five-set fourth round win over Gilles Simon, Djokovic looked like a man possessed with a place in the final at stake. The opening two sets were but a blur as Djokovic, conceding just three games, whizzed to a two set lead under an hour.

Federer managed to stop the rot in the third set, seeing his first break points of the match and converting his fifth en route to taking it 6-3. It marked the 34-year-old's first set against Djokovic since the pair's first meeting in the fourth round of the 2007 edition of the tournament.

But that would be as good as it would get for Federer on the night.

Djokovic soon resumed normal service in the fourth, laying siege on the Federer serve - which cracked in the eighth game of the set. Federer produced one of the points of the tournament at 15-30 but Djokovic won the next two points on the Swiss' serve and promptly served it out to love.

It was the Serb's 37th win in 38 matches in all competitions, with his only defeat coming to Federer at the ATP Finals. Djokovic would go on to win his 6th Australian Open title and 1st at Roland Garros to become the first player since Rod Laver (1969) to hold all 4 major titles.
