Tsitsipas began the year at the Australian Open, where Taylor Fritz shocked him in the fourth round in an enthralling four-set contest. He reached the semi-finals at the Los Cabos Open but lost to Casper Ruud in straight sets.
He reached the quarter-finals in Mexico but lost to eventual champion Alex de Minaur despite winning the first set comfortably. Good form eluded him at the Sunshine Double, with him losing in the fourth round in Indian Wells and the second round in Miami.
The Greek turned his season around in Monte-Carlo, beating Laslo Djere, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Alexander Zverev, Karen Khachanov, and Jannik Sinner en route to his third final at the venue.
He beat Ruud in the finals, dropping just 5 games, to capture his third title in Monte Carlo in as many attempts. He backed that good run in Barcelona, but was defeated this time by Ruud in the finals, in what was a re-match of their Monte-Carlo Masters final from a week before it.
The No. 118-ranked Monteiro, meanwhile, has primarily played in the challenger tour so far this season. His first match on the ATP tour this season came at his home tournament, the Rio Open. He reached the last eight where he lost a tight three-setter to Sebastian Baez.
Monteiro began his Madrid Open in the qualifiers, overcoming the likes of Lucas Pouille and Radu Albot to secure a berth in just his second tournament of the season. He impressed against Dusan Lajovic in the first round, sealing a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Stefanos Tsitsipas walks into his encounter with Thiago Monteiro as the favorite to go through, but he can expect a tough fight from the Brazilian who specializes in the red dirt.
Despite plowing through a couple of tight three-setters in the qualifiers, Monteiro turned it up a notch during the first round, dismissing his opponent in straight sets. He served well, winning a whopping 89% of points on his first serve, and was equally potent on the return, breaking his opponent's serve twice in as many opportunities presented.
