Daniil Medvedev vs Alex Molcan preview

Fourth seed Daniil Medvedev continues his Miami Open campaign when he takes on the unseeded Alex Molcan in the third round on Monday (March 27).
The fifth-ranked Medvedev improved to a tour-best 25-3 this season by beating Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round in Miami. In the process, he returned to winning ways after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final last week. The defeat snapped the Russian's 19-match winning streak that encompassed title runs at Rotterdam (ATP 500), Doha (ATP 250) and Dubai (ATP 500).
Medvedev's two other losses this year came in the Adelaide 1 semifinals against eventual champion Novak Djokovic and to Sebastian Korda in the Australian Open third round. The Russian is 10-4 in Miami, having made back-to-back quarterfinals previously.
Meanwhile, World No. 56 Molcan is now 6-8 in 2023 after beating qualifier Jordan Thompson and 19th seed Yoshihito Nishioka in Miami. His four other wins this year have come at Indian Wells (2), Rio de Janeiro and the Australian Open. The left-hander is making his Miami main draw debut this year.

Daniil Medvedev vs Alex Molcan prediction

Medvedev and Molcan are essentially baseliners, but the similarities in their game style end there.
The red-hot Medvedev is one of the finest players on tour. The 2021 US Open winner has a strong serve, hits powerfully off either flank and moves well for his height. He's a counterpuncher par excellence but is not averse to winning points at the net and keeps his opponent guessing.
Molcan, meanwhile, has more modest attributes, though his left-handed serve could cause some discomfiture to Medvedev. Nevertheless, considering the form the Russian is in currently, anything but a Medvedev win will be a huge surprise as the former World No. 1 eyes his fourth title of the year.
Prediction: Medvedev to win in straight sets
