Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Cristian Garin preview

Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas commences his Miami Open campaign in right earnest against qualifier Cristian Garin in the third round on Monday (March 27).
The third-ranked Tsitsipas has a 13-3 win-loss record for the season after receiving a walkover against Richard Gasquet in his Miami opener following a first-round bye. The 24-year-old Greek made a rousing start to the year, winning his first ten matches, before losing to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final.
Tsitsipas returned to winning ways in the Davis Cup, winning both his matches against Ecuador and reaching the Rotterdam second round. However, he's coming off a surprise opening-round exit against Jordan Thompson at Indian Wells in the last fortnight. The Greek is 7-4 in Miami, having lost to eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round last year.
Meanwhile, World No. 82 Garin qualified for the Miami main draw, where he beat Marcos Giron and 27th seed Sebastian Baez to improve to 8-6 in 2023. Last week, the Chilean emerged from qualifying to make the Indian Wells fourth round, losing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Garin's only other wins this year have come in the Davis Cup, Cordoba and Santiago. The 26-year-old is now 2-2 in Miami, having lost in the first round in the last two years.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Cristian Garin head-to-head
Tsitsipas has taken both his previous meetings with Garin, with the pair's last meeting coming in the Monte-Carlo Round of 16 two years ago. Their only other clash also came on clay - the semifinals at Hamburg in 2020.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Cristian Garin prediction

While both Tsitsipas and Garin like to dominate opponents from the back of the court, the Greek is the better player on hardcourts.
Tsitsipas has proven pedigree on the surface, reaching the finals at Australian Open, Canada Open and Cincinnati, and winning the 2019 ATP Finals. His strong serve and powerful hitting off either flank keep him in good stead. He also moves well for his height and can also finish off points at the net.
Garin, by contrast, tends to play his best tennis on claycourts, where his long groundstroke swings are not a liability. He has not beaten Tsitsipas in two previous meetings and is unlikely to break the duck on his least favored surface despite his inspired run at the Sunshine Double this year.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in straight sets
