Hubert Hurkacz vs Laslo Djere preview

Tenth seed Hubert Hurkacz opens his Monte Carlo campaign against Serbia's Laslo Djere on Sunday.
World No. 12 Hurkacz is 14-8 this season after stumbling in the opening round in Estoril this week. The 26-year-old Pole has been on the podium this year, winning the Marseille title.
After winning two of his four matches at the inaugural United Cup Down Under, Hurkacz made the second week at the Australian Open. He reached the Dubai quarterfinals at his next stop before enduring a lean Sunshine Double - losing in the Round of 32 at both Indian Wells and Miami. Hurkacz has a 4-3 record in Monte Carlo, with three of those wins coming last year en route to the quarterfinals (lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the third set tiebreak).
Meanwhile, the 58th-ranked Djere is 10-8 in 2023, with his best results of the season being quarterfinal runs in Auckland and Santiago. He's coming off a second-round defeat in Miami. Djere has a 2-3 record in Monte Carlo, with both wins coming last year en route to the Round of 32.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Laslo Djere prediction

Both Hurkacz and Djere look to dominate opponents from the back of the court, but the Pole is the more attacking of the two players.
However, Djere is the more accomplished of the two on clay, winning both his career singles titles (2019 Rio de Janeiro, 2020 Sardinia) on the surface. By contrast, none of Hurkacz's seven singles finals have come on clay.
Hurkacz is, of course, the stronger server, but serve is usually not much of a factor on the slower surface. Both players have lost eight times this year, but Djere - with a better baseline game - is at home on clay, which means the Serb should take this first-time meeting.
Pick: Djere in three sets
