The 30th edition of the Mexican Open will start on February 27 and we are in for an exciting week of tennis in Acapulco. While Rafael Nadal will not be defending his title, the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and others are set to compete.
The likes of Taylor Fritz, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini will also take part in the ATP 500 event, thus making for an exciting player field.
What is the Mexican Open?
The Mexican Open, also known as the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, is an outdoor hard-court tournament that takes place in Acapulco. It is part of the ATP 500 series and has been held every year since its inception in 1993, with the exception of 2021.
The Mexican Open started as a clay-court event but became a hard-court competition in 2014. Austrian former World No. 1 Thomas Muster won the inaugural edition of the tournament by beating Spain's Carlos Costa 6-2, 6-4 in the final.
Muster, along with Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, has won the joint-most number of titles at the Mexican Open - four. Other champions in the tournament's history include Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moya and Dominic Thiem.
Rafael Nadal won last year's competition by beating Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 in the final.
Venue
The ATP 500 event will be held at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco, which has a capacity of over 10,000.
Schedule
The first-round matches in Acapulco will take place on Tuesday, February 28. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Thursday and Friday respectively, with the singles final scheduled for Saturday, March 4.
Players
Rafael Nadal won't be defending his title this year, but the tournament will have some top players vying for the title. Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed and will be a heavy favorite given his current form.
Casper Ruud is the second seed and will also be among the title contenders as he is capable of giving even the best of players a run for their money on his day.
Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune are seeded third and fourth respectively and are both capable of challenging for the title, as are Cameron Norrie and Frances Tiafoe.
Other players competing in the tournament include Matteo Berrettini, Denis Shapovalov and John Isner.
Prize Money
The total prize pool for the Mexican Open is $2,013,940 and the men's singles champion will earn $376,620.
