Tennis icon Andre Agassi recently celebrated his compatriot Frances Tiafoe’s historic achievement at the US Open 2024. Tiafoe joined American tennis greats Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick, and Agassi himself as the only American men to reach at least three US Open quarterfinals since 2000.

Tiafoe’s journey to the last eight of the ongoing US Open has been nothing short of spectacular. The 28th seed, Alexei Popyrin, was his latest victim in a thrilling Round-of-16 match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, September 1. Tiafoe triumphed with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3, securing his third consecutive quarterfinal appearance at the prestigious tournament.

Popyrin, who stunned the tennis world by defeating defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round, was unable to withstand Tiafoe’s relentless performance.

Former World No. 1 and eight-time Grand Slam champion Agassi took to social media to express pride in Tiafoe’s accomplishment. On September 1, the 54-year-old shared a graphic on his Instagram stories that highlighted Tiafoe’s achievement, accompanied by an American flag emoji.

Tiafoe will take on ninth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, September 3. The last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title was Andy Roddick, who claimed the 2003 US Open by defeating World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz's current coach Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 in the final.

Andre Agassi has voiced his support for his fellow Americans, hoping to see one of them clinch the prestigious trophy at the 2024 US Open.

In a recent clip shared by the Tennis Channel on X (formerly Twitter), the two-time US Open champion was asked to name his favorite to win the New York Major. Agassi highlighted the strengths of several American players, noting Tommy Paul's athleticism, Taylor Fritz's quick strikes, and Ben Shelton's powerful serve.

"I'm rooting for an American to break through in their backyard. We have 5 of them in Top 20. I mean, Tommy Paul's atheticism, the way Taylor hits the ball as quick as the courts are playing. I mean, Ben Shelton with the way he's serving," Andre Agassi said.

The American also mentioned Sebastian Korda and Frances Tiafoe as strong contenders, saying:

"Sebby [Sebastian Korda] with the way he's hitting it. Tiafoe could come, you know, I mean coming off last year, he turned the corner last week. I'm kind of hoping to see one of them do something really special."

12th seed Taylor Fritz and 20th seed Frances Tiafoe have advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face fourth seed Alexander Zverev and ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov, respectively.

However, 14th seed Tommy Paul fell to top seed Jannik Sinner 6-7(3), 6-7(5), 1-6 in the Round of 16, while 16th seed Sebastian Korda was ousted in the second round by Tomas Machac, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, 13th seed Ben Shelton was defeated by Tiafoe in an all-American third-round clash.
