The 2024 ATP Finals photoshoot featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and other players prompted viral fashion writer Derek Guy to verdict on their outfits.
Derek Guy is a famous Canadian men's fashion industry writer and commentator who is also known on social media as "themenswearguy"
The ATP Finals players arrived in suits and formal pants at the Piazza Carlo Alberto on Thursday, November 7, greeted by thousands of fans. The top four, including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, wore blue suits, while the rest sported cream-colored suits. The players then gathered for a photo shoot at the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento. The pictures from the shoot have since gone viral on social media, eliciting a reaction from the famous fashion writer.
Taking to X on Saturday, Guy compared the outfits to the ones players, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, wore at the iconic 2009 ATP Finals photoshoot. Criticizing the color choices and the absence of ties, Derek claimed these outfits were second best to those from 15 years ago,
"Some of the outfits on the right have bad color choices. but most conspicuously, they are missing ties, which makes the outfits look very plain," Derek Guy wrote.
Guy further marked his disapproval, pointing out the clothing's lack of padding, and proper tailoring.
"Many of these jackets look bad because they are too soft for the wearer. The jacket needs a bit more padding, a stiffer haircloth and canvas, and frankly better tailoring. Jordan Peterson's tailoring suffers from the same problem," he added.
He termed Casper Ruud's outfit "odd", writing that such clothing would be more apt as suits than sport coats.
"This outfit is odd partly bc it's missing the three buttons on DB. But also DBs are easire to wear as suits, rather than sport coats. If you get a DB Sport coat, make it navy," he wrote.
The ATP Finals will commence on Sunday, November 10, in the indoor hardcourts of the Inalpi Arena.
Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in same group at ATP Finals, Jannik Sinner joins Daniil Medvedev
Carlos Alcaraz and new World No. 2 Alexander Zverev are part of the John Newcombe Group. They will be joined by Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud. World No. 9 Rublev entered the year-end tournament courtesy of Novak Djokovic's withdrawal, citing injury.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner will play against former champion Daniil Medvedev in the Ilie Nastase Group. Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur are also part of the group.
The tournament's opener will witness Medvedev facing off against Fritz at 2 PM, CET on November 10. This will be their second meeting on the tour. Medvedev won the previous encounter in the 2022 Cincinnati Masters quarterfinal.
Later in the day, Sinner will lock horns with Alex de Minaur at 8:30 PM. The Italian has won all their previous seven meetings, including the most recent one in the 2024 ABN AMRO Open final.
