Carlos Alcaraz's vow to Spanish fans ahead of his heartbreaking Paris Olympics men's singles final loss to Novak Djokovic has been revisited by fans. According to fans, the Spaniard should have been more humble in choosing his words.

Alcaraz squared off against Djokovic in the gold medal match on Sunday, August 4, weeks after the Spaniard thoroughly outclassed the Serb in the Wimbledon Championships final. However, this time around, the World No. 3 faced a more assured and confident Djokovic.

While Alcaraz tested the 24-time Major winner with his dazzling array of shots and lightning-quick court coverage, the Serb remained resolute and played arguably his finest tennis in what has so far been a topsy-turvy season for him.

Ultimately, it was Djokovic who clinched the gold medal, winning the two neck-to-neck sets 7-6(3), 7-6(2). A heartbroken Alcaraz soon turned tearful, ruing the missed opportunities he had to break the World No. 2 during the titanic tussle.

Not long after the match came to its conclusion, Alcaraz's comments from before the contest surfaced on X (formerly Twitter). The Spaniard had told Spanish fans via Alex Corretja that he would win the gold medal.

"To the Spaniards who watch me on TV, tell them I am going to put on a show in the final and that I am going to give them what they want: the gold," Alcaraz had told Corretja.

Several fans suggested that Alcaraz had become a bit too overconfident in his abilities, which ultimately backfired against him.

"Well, you played marvellous tennis but made a classical mistake - you underestimated heart of the true champion. Which you will be one day if you refrain from comments like this one," a fan wrote.
"For one moment, Carlos Alcaraz believed his own hype and believed he'd reached a different level. One moment is all Novak Djokovic ever needs," commented another fan.
"Carlos did amazing. Maybe he was overconfident. Novak’s level was insane today," another fan chimed in.

Many others poked fun at the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion over his prediction of winning the gold medal.

"This is what overconfidence does lmao," a fan wrote.
"This didn't age very well," another fan added.
"Blud thought he’ll play the Real Madrid agenda, Mf you are against the Goat," another fan weighed in.
"Next time stay humble lil boy," commented yet another fan.

After finally containing his tears, Alcaraz reflected on the match during his post-match on-court interview. The Spaniard admitted to feeling pained by the loss but confessed that Djokovic deserved to win the contest as the former greatly upped his level when it mattered most.

"It’s painful to lose the way I lost this match. I had my chances to probably be up in the match. I couldn’t take it. Novak was playing great. He deserves this. In the tough moments he increased his level. He played unbelievable shots.. an unbelievable game," Alcaraz said.

The four-time Major winner would be aiming to move on from the humbling loss to Djokovic swiftly, as the buildup to the 2024 US Open begins. The hardcourt Major marked Alcaraz's maiden Grand Slam triumph back in 2022 when he defeated Casper Ruud in the final.
