Third-seeded Nicolas Jarry will take on Lukas Klein in the second round of the Chengdu Open for a place in the quarterfinal. However, since that result, the World No. 28 has lost six consecutive opening-round matches. He last played at the US Open, losing to Christopher O'Connell. Being a higher seed, Jarry got a bye in the opening round.

Lukas Klein has won 7 out of the 16 matches that he has played on the Tour this year. He last played at the Davis Cup, losing the singles tie against McKenzie McDonald of the USA. At the Chengdu Open, he won against Adam Walton in straight sets in the first round.
