Holger Rune defeated Casper Ruud in the Italian Open semi-finals with a dominant comeback. He advanced to his third Masters 1000 title bout with a hard-fought quarter-final victory over Novak Djokovic.

The Dane came back from a break down in the second set to beat fourth seed Ruud 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2, and earn his 27th victory of the season. He hit his groundstrokes with force and deft touch at times, outwitting Ruud in a tight clash to win after two hours and 41 minutes.

Tennis fans were overjoyed in view of this, and they took to Twitter to express their delight. According to one user, while Rune lacks prime Novak Djokovic's talent, he possesses the same inner belief and fire as the Serb.

"Holger Rune quite doesn't have (prime) Djokovic's talent, but he that same inner-belief that Nole has. That fire in him that he is tougher than you and that you're gonna have to drag him off the court before he concedes a match. It's really fun and inspiring to watch!" the user wrote.

Another user stated that the Dane isn't just about big talks; he also proves his mettle.

"7th consecutive Top 5 victory for Holger Rune. 3rd Masters 1000 final, 2nd on clay and in this season. Will move up to No. 6 in the rankings. He doesn't just talk the talk. He walks the walk too," the user tweeted.

Another account stated that the 20-year-old deserves the title because he defeated Novak Djokovic along the way.

"If you beat Djokovic you absolutely deserve to hold the trophy."

Following his victory, Holger Rune stated that he felt he had nothing to lose in the second set and decided to play freely and aggressively in order to enjoy the game, which proved to be the deciding factor.

"I had nothing to lose in the second [set], so I just told myself to play freely and enjoy it as I thought it would be my last set here. I told myself to play aggressively and enjoy it and I did it and that was the key to comeback," Rune said.
"I really played some of my best tennis in the past two matches against Novak [Djokovic] and then Casper [Ruud]. Two difficult players to play, so I had to find my best tennis and I actually didn't find it today, only at the end and that is why I turned it around," the Dane added.

Holger Rune will meet the winner of the ongoing semifinal match between Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
