Naomi Osaka's boyfriend Cordae went on a rant about the lack of importance of first-week sales of an album as they weren't the perfect way to paint a picture in today's era of streaming. The American rapper is set to drop his latest album, 'The Crossroads,' on November 15.
Cordae's latest album will feature 16 songs and include blockbuster collaborations such as Lil Wayne and Ye. This will be his third album after 'The Lost Boy' and 'From a Bird's Eye View'.
The Japanese star had earlier promoted her boyfriend's album on Instagram and a day later the 27-year-old penned a long message stating how stressing on the first week sales of an album was an inaccurate method in today's world of streaming.
"Want to say this now I don't give a f**k about a first week sales It’s a very inaccurate way to calculate impact, especially with the current streaming metrics. I seen somebody do 11K first week and then do a ARENA TOUR off the same album. Niggas said my last project first week numbers wasn't good and I ended up doing a sold out headline tour..," Naomi Osaka's boyfriend said.
He also discussed how it was difficult to gauge the number of listeners of your music in today's time as opposed to the 90s and 2000s, when album sales were the dominant metric.
"In the 90/2000s music was consumed by people actually going to the stores and buying albums. When you did 100k first week that meant 100 thousand people went and bought the cd. Now you can have 300,000 people listening to your album on streaming, and the units of sales Equivalent is 200."
"Let's kill this rap is dying narrative" - Naomi Osaka's boyfriend dissects the strengths and weaknesses of different genres of music
Continuing his thoughts, Naomi Osaka's boyfriend Cordae dissected the strengths and weaknesses of the popular genres in music as he wanted to put the 'rap is dying' narrative to bed.
"Let's kill this rap is dying narrative too. It's racist. Every genre has it's strengths and weaknesses as far as music consumption goes. Rap streams really well but a lot of rappers don't do well on tour. R&B has lower streams comparatively but they KILL shit on the road. Pop streams crazy but it's the most fiscal genre. Country ain't start poppin again until they stole trap drums from rap and n****s started doing it," Naomi Osaka said.
He later stated how money and statistics were ruining the purity of music.
"Point is every genre is beautiful and unique and consumed differently in its own way, on a case by case basis. I Love and enjoy them all and stop making music about numbers and money. It's killing something that's so pure."
Naomi Osaka has been dating Cordae since 2019 and the two also welcomed their first child, a daughter, Skai, in 2023. Osaka returned to court in January of this year.
However, the Japanese struggled to replicate her higher levels and failed to capture a single title to mark her return. She brought Serena Williams' ex-coach Patrick Mouratglou on board and the duo debuted their partnership at the China Open. Unfortunately, the Japanese's season came to an early end due to a back injury.
